Hitachi Rail has successfully built the first urban railway system in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, improving transportation efficiency and reducing traffic congestion through modern railway technology and infrastructure improvements.
Project Details
This project includes the construction of a 19,7-kilometer-long railway line, with both elevated and underground tracks between Ben Thanh Station and Suoi Tien Terminal. For Vietnam’s first urban railway, Hitachi Rail has incorporated 51 modern train sets with 17 carriages, along with advanced electrical and mechanical systems. These trains are designed to increase the capacity of the public transport network and shorten travel times.
JICA's Contributions and Goals
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the project and said the initiative, which aims to modernize Vietnam’s public transport infrastructure, is an important step towards solving the city’s traffic problems. The project also aims to promote sustainable urban development by providing faster commuting options.
Innovative Solutions from Hitachi Rail
Hitachi Rail has improved the safety and connectivity of the railway line with advanced technologies such as communication-based train control (CBTC) and wireless telecommunications systems. It has also modernized the system with features such as platform screen doors, overhead cabling and automatic fare collection. These features make the system a model for future railway projects.
Global Transportation Infrastructure Development
Hitachi has successfully applied digital signaling and telecommunications technologies not only in Vietnam but also in high-speed railway projects in Turkey, improving efficiency in the region. These projects demonstrate Hitachi's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and contributing to global transportation solutions.
A Fundamental Step for Ho Chi Minh City's Future
Vietnam’s first urban railway system is a significant step towards solving urban mobility challenges and reducing traffic congestion. Integrating advanced technology and environmentally friendly solutions, it also lays the groundwork for future expansion. Hitachi’s expertise positions it as a global leader in transportation modernization and urban development.
Vietnam-Japan Partnership
Ho Chi Minh City’s railway project demonstrates the effective collaboration between Vietnam and Japan, and is an important example of how they are transforming urban infrastructure worldwide by creating a strong partnership for sustainable growth and modern transportation solutions.
