Test Services Begin on Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line

The metro line in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s largest city, has begun test runs as of November 11, 2024. The major transportation project aims to dramatically transform the region’s public transport infrastructure. During the tests, trains will run every four minutes and 4 seconds in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening every day.

Tests reportedly began on October 14 and ended on November 8. While the line’s capacity was initially used at only 20%, operators will meet on November 18, 2024 to discuss future operational plans based on current data.

Status and Future of the Project

The metro line includes 17 of the 14 trains initially ordered from Hitachi Rail. These trains will operate according to passenger demand on both weekdays and weekends. Three additional trains will also be kept in reserve for higher passenger loads. The line's completion rate is currently 98,6%, with final work focusing on bridges, service facilities and fire safety checks.

Staff are continuing to be trained to ensure uninterrupted service ahead of the official opening. The official opening of the project is planned for December 22, 2024.

Free Travel and Ticket Prices

For the first month, residents and visitors in the Ho Chi Minh region will be able to use the metro line for free. After that, ticket prices will range from 6.000 to 20.000 VND (Vietnamese dong) depending on the length of the trip.

Project History and Investment

Construction of this 19,7-kilometer metro line connecting Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien stations began in 2012. The total investment amount was set at approximately $1,82 billion. Originally scheduled for 2018, the opening was postponed several times due to various technical and financial difficulties.

With this significant development in transportation infrastructure, Ho Chi Minh City's metro line aims to make urban transportation more efficient and reduce traffic congestion in the area.
