Move to Improve Railway Reliability in Singapore

With the aim of improving the efficiency of transport infrastructure and enhancing passenger comfort in Singapore, SMRT has announced a significant partnership with CRRC Sifang. The collaboration aims to increase train reliability and improve service quality across Singapore’s rail network.

Improved Maintenance and Safety with New Monitoring Systems

The joint project involves the implementation of advanced monitoring systems, particularly on SMRT’s C151B trains. These systems will help improve the reliability of the trains and help detect potential failures in advance. Under the pilot project, the trains will be equipped with Condition Monitoring (CM) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems. These systems will allow engineers to quickly detect potential problems, reducing the risk of failure and improving overall safety.

Service Standards Will Improve with Digitalization and Automation

SMRT and CRRC Sifang aim to digitalise train management and increase automation. This initiative will make train maintenance more proactive and minimise equipment wear. Additionally, SMRT’s Train Information Management System (TIMS) will be upgraded. This upgrade will provide key data on critical train systems, making maintenance processes more efficient.

Innovative Solutions for Environmental Sustainability

The project will also modernise the trains’ cooling systems and motor units. New air-conditioning technologies will help meet environmental targets while reducing energy consumption. This will make a significant contribution to Singapore’s sustainable transport solutions goals.

Network-Wide Implementation After 2026

The POC (Proof of Concept) project is expected to be completed by mid-2026. After this date, SMRT will consider implementing these improvements across the entire network, depending on the success of the project.

In conclusion, SMRT’s partnership with CRRC Sifang is an important step towards making Singapore’s railway system more reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly.
