Importance and Scope of the Project
The 273-kilometer Malaba-Kampala Railway Line, with a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour, will be fully electrified and will be built in accordance with European and American standards. The project includes:
- 2 big stations,
- 4 medium-sized stations,
- 1 marshalling yard (loading-unloading center),
- 3 load terminals it will include.
The project is of critical strategic importance not only to Uganda but to the entire East African region. The line will modernize the region's logistics infrastructure and accelerate trade from the interior of East Africa to the Malaba border crossing and from there to Kampala.
Economic and Strategic Contributions
This railway line will play a significant role in Uganda’s economic development goals. The modern electrified infrastructure will reduce carbon emissions and ensure environmental sustainability. In addition, the cost of freight transport will decrease, increasing trade volumes between Uganda and neighboring countries.
This investment aims to accelerate regional integration and economic development, while also strengthening the transportation infrastructure of the East African Community (EAC).
