Portugal is implementing a new system to improve rail transport and make transport more affordable. The green rail pass, which will come into effect on October 21, 2024, will replace the national rail pass. This new system covers regional, interregional services, second-class intercity services and some city lines in Porto and Lisbon, at an affordable cost of 20 euros per month. This innovation aims to provide citizens with easier access to rail transport.
Scope of Transition and Terms of Use
The green rail card can be used on city trains in Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto, as well as on second-class intercity trains. However, it should be noted that seat reservations must be made 24 hours before travel. In addition, only one seat can be reserved per journey, up to a maximum of two different journeys per day. This system will encourage passengers to plan their travel in advance and ensure regularity in ticket sales.
Limited Line Coverage Transition
Importantly, the green rail pass is only valid on lines that are not covered by metropolitan intermodal passes. In the urban areas of Lisbon and Porto, the pass will only cover certain lines. For example, the Carregado – Azambuja line in Lisbon and the Vila das Aves – Guimarães, Paredes – Marco de Canaveses, Paramos – Aveiro and Lousado – Braga routes in Porto will be included. On the other hand, high-speed trains such as the Alfa Pendular and Internacional Celta will remain outside the new system.
Financial Support and Continuity of Implementation
The financing of the new railway crossing will be carried out through compensation under the public service contract signed between the state and CP — Comboios de Portugal. The budget allocated for this year is set at 5 million euros and 2025 million euros for 19. It has also been announced that the current national rail card will be valid until 31 October.
This new regulation for rail transport in Portugal aims to provide both economic benefits and strengthen the transport network. With the implementation, it is expected that rail travel will become more accessible.
