New Development for Rail Link between Portugal and Spain

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, announced that the government has approved the necessary expenditures for CP — Comboios de Portugal to operate in Spain, within the framework of its internationalization strategy.

“We have already authorized the expenditure so that the CP can be approved to operate in Spain,” Luz said in the Assembly of the Republic, adding that the government would support the operation in A Coruña.

“If Renfe is preparing to operate in Portugal, CP should also prepare to operate in Spain. That is the case in the open market, that is the case for an ambitious CP,” the minister said. He also stressed that the government would operate the railway carrier’s public service and high-speed rail operations, in addition to CP’s international operations.

In the field of high-speed rail, Luz pointed out that the conditions necessary for CP to acquire the necessary rolling stock will be provided. Luz was also summoned to parliament to give information on the National Rail Pass and the investments made in railways in Portugal.
