Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the fees collected from ships passing through the Turkish Straits without a stopover will be rearranged. Reminding that they increased the Bosphorus tolls for the first time in 39 years on October 7, 2022, Minister Uraloğlu said, "As of July 1, 2024, as a result of the work carried out with the relevant institutions under the coordination of our General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, we are making a new update on the Bosphorus tolls with the decision of our President." said.

“By Increasing Fees, We Make $5,07”

Reminding that the provisions of the Montreux Turkish Straits Convention apply to Bosphorus tolls, Uraloğlu said, “Previously, we were collecting a fee of $1983 based on a fixed value from 7 until October 2022, 0,80. After 39 years, with the update we made to these fees by Presidential Decree on October 7, 2022, we increased them approximately 5 times to 4,08 Dollars. We increased this fee to $1 on July 2023, 4,42. Now, we are making a new update and increasing it to $ 1 as of July 2024, 5,07.” he said.

Minister Uraloğlu continued as follows:

“From 1983 until 2022, there were fees that were kept constant and not updated for approximately 39 years. In line with the Presidential Decree, fees have been updated every year since 2022. From now on, updates will continue on July 1 every year.”

Bosphorus Crossings Are Regulated by the Montreux Turkish Straits Convention

Stating that, according to the Montreux Turkish Straits Convention, ships passing through the Turkish Straits without a stopover are charged for three items: health inspection service, lighthouse service and rescue service, Uraloğlu said, “In calculating the fees, the net tonnage (NRT) of the ships is taken as a basis, while the unit is indexed to the ounce price of gold. It is based on the 'Golden Franc'.” made the statement.

The Income We Provide from Our Throats Will Increase

Referring to the data regarding the last price update, Minister Uraloğlu said, “When we consider a ship with 10 thousand net tonnage, this ship was paying a total fee of 2022 thousand 3 Dollars for lighthouse, rescue and health services items before the first update in 240. After July 1, 2024, this ship will pay a total fee of 20 thousand 370 dollars. In other words, with the updates we made, we will increase the fees by 2022 times compared to before 6,3. In this way, foreign exchange inflow to our state treasury will increase. "With the fees we collect, we are constantly improving our necessary infrastructures and traffic monitoring systems to increase maritime safety and security as well as environmental safety in the Turkish Straits, one of the most risky narrow waterways in the world." he said.
