Temperature Increase Triggered Plankton Reproduction in Izmir Bay

MAKING A STATEMENT ABOUT THE OVERPRODUCTION OF "PLANKTON" TYPE ORGANISMS AND THE CHANGE OF THE COLOR OF THE SEA IN SOME POINTS OF THE GULF, İZSU GENERAL DIRECTORATE SAID, "PLANKTONS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SEA POLLUTION." (İHA/İZMİR-İHA)

Due to air temperatures being well above seasonal norms, overheating in sea waters caused the breeding and proliferation of various organisms in the Gulf of Izmir. Making a statement about the excessive reproduction of "plankton" type organisms and the change in the color of the sea in some parts of the Gulf, İZSU General Directorate said, "Planktons have nothing to do with sea pollution."

Increasing air temperatures in Izmir in recent days have caused sudden explosions of different types of microorganisms in the Gulf. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate made the following statements on the subject:

“The color changes occurring in the gulf are monitored by İZSU General Directorate Environmental Protection and Control Department, Gulf Branch Directorate. Sudden increases in air temperature also increase the seawater surface temperature, which causes the explosion of different types of microorganisms. It changes the color of the water on the sea surface in the form of macro and micro algal blooms, forming red, yellow, white or green colored layers. The situation can be seen as periodic fluctuations due to high air temperatures in regions such as Izmir Bay, where shallow water circulation is low and the effect of waves and wind is low. İZSU General Directorate carries out the necessary examinations by taking samples from plankton species with experts from Ege University Faculty of Fisheries and TÜBİTAK MAM. "The plankton seen has nothing to do with marine pollution."
