Great Convenience for Drivers in China

The Ministry of Public Security announced that China will start digitizing motor vehicle registration and licensing procedures in July and improve traffic management services. The application will first be launched in 60 cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, and will be expanded to the whole country by the end of the year.

Chinese law requires drivers to have both their driver's license and vehicle registration permit with them when behind the wheel. Previously, the digitalization of annual inspection processes of motor vehicles and driver's licenses had been fully carried out. Traffic management authorities had completed and issued 1 billion 475 million electronic inspection transactions and 250 million driver's licenses digitally.

As of the end of May 2024, China's total motor vehicle population reached 340 million, 440 million of which are passenger cars, excluding motorcycles and trucks. The total number of drivers is 530 million. According to these data, China ranks first in the world in terms of the number of motor vehicles and drivers.

Wang Qiang, Director of the Traffic Department of the Ministry of Public Security, announced that more than 100 reform measures have been implemented in recent years, thereby reducing costs by 100 billion yuan (about 14 billion dollars). A mobile application called “Traffic Management 12123” was also introduced during the meeting. This app already has 540 million registered users.
