Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has supplied railway signaling systems for the extension of the Yellow Line of the newly opened Metro do Porto in the city of Porto. Alstom has equipped the new line extension with the same signaling system already in service on the network, including a state-of-the-art locking system that allows real-time monitoring of vehicles. The engineering component and the installation and commissioning of the system are managed at Alstom's facilities in Maia, Porto.
The expansion of Metro do Porto's Yellow Line runs from Santo Ovídio to Vila d'Este south of Oporto, adding three new stations, one of which is underground. The new 3,1 km long route includes a five hundred meter viaduct and a one kilometer long tunnel.
“Alstom and Metro do Porto maintain a close and long-term partnership with the aim of improving the mobility and comfort of passengers in the city of Oporto,” said David Torres, General Manager of Alstom Portugal. “From our engineering facilities in Maia, we develop and maintain signaling projects and digital mobility technologies for Portuguese and international markets, and the opening of the Yellow Line expansion is further proof of our commitment to promoting sustainable mobility in Portugal,” he said.
Metro do Porto is the light rail system of the Portuguese city of Oporto, covering approximately 78 km of rail and sub-tracks and carrying approximately 70 million passengers per year. Alstom has supplied 102 trains to this network currently in service and ATP (Automatic Train Protection) rail and on-board signaling systems for the entire network.
Alstom is a global leader in the passenger transport market with more than 30 years of experience in urban signaling systems and more than 32 equipped metro lines in more than 190 countries.
Alstom has been operating in Portugal for over 30 years and currently two out of every three trains operating in this country are produced by Alstom or Alstom technology, including high-speed, regional, metro and electric trains. In the digital domain, more than 1.500 km of the Portuguese rail network and more than 500 in-car units are managed by Alstom's ATP system, a signaling solution developed specifically for the Portuguese market. In terms of urban mobility, Alstom provided the signaling system of Metro do Porto and produced the first 102 trains currently operating on this network. Alstom also supplies the ATP system installed on 18 trains that this operator recently purchased.
