Meriç Living Park in Bornova, which was re-created by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in line with the demands of the residents of the neighborhood, has come to an end. The park, which will be the center of attraction of the city with its trees, bird species, orchard, water-resistant plants, sports facilities, library and nursery, is expected to open next month.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerThe countdown has begun for Bornova Meriç Living Park, which rose from the ashes in line with the aim of creating "Living Parks" where the people of Izmir will integrate with nature and forest. The work carried out by İzdoğa, Parks and Gardens Department, Technical Affairs Department, İZSU and İZBETON teams in Meriç Living Park, which started to be renovated within the scope of the work of the Emergency Solution Team established by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, has come to an end.

60 thousand square meters more green space is added to Izmir

Meriç Living Park, which contains the unique nature of Izmir, spreads over an area of 60 thousand square meters. The park, which was renovated in line with the demands of the residents of the neighborhood and in harmony with nature, includes many social areas such as an urban garden, astroturf pitch, basketball court, seating areas, children's playground, cafeteria, observation terrace, condolence house, nursery and library. The park will be the center of attraction of the entire city, especially Meriç, Serintepe and Zafer neighborhoods and the Fashion, Textile and Apparel (MTK) Site.

“We aim to open in November”

Stating that they are planning to open the park in November, Parks and Gardens Department Planning and Project Branch Manager Volkan Barbaros said, “Meriç Living Park was actually an existing park. But of course, since the productions made over the years had reached the end of their service life, renovation work was required. "Especially with the work of the Emergency Solution Team, the wishes of the people of the region were evaluated and various activities were added here," he said.

“The entrance gate of Mount Nif to the city”

Stating that Meriç Living Park is an extension of Nif Mountain, an entrance gate to the city, Barbaros said, “Living Parks have two basic elements. One is that people are inhabiting nature, and the other is that nature is inhabiting the city. Meriç Living Park covers the penetration of nature into the city. Meriç Living Park is currently an extension of Nif Mountain, an entrance gate to the city. Visitors to the park will also see that there are large trees here. These are actually trees grown in the Izmir ecosystem. Another reason why we consider it as a Living Park is that although it is in the city, it also hosts many migratory bird species. Visitors will be able to observe bird species in the park by identifying them from the signs. Here again, plant species that are compatible with nature, especially those with low water consumption, are included to combat the climate crisis. This is a very important work. "It will serve as a park where water is used economically," he said.
