In order to make Bursa resistant to earthquakes, the Metropolitan Municipality, on the one hand, accelerates urban transformation projects, and on the other hand, continues its micro-zoning and ground analysis studies, which are the basis of development plans, without interruption. With the study covering an area of approximately 6 thousand 135 hectares within the borders of Yıldırım district, areas with high risk of liquefaction and the areas most suitable for urban transformation will be revealed with scientific data.
The Metropolitan Municipality, which is working hard to make Bursa, which is located in the first degree earthquake zone, more resistant to the devastating effects of a possible earthquake, continued the Earthquake Risk Reduction and Prevention Planning Project that it initiated together with JICA, and also scrutinized the ground structure in areas open to construction. Having completed the ground-related microzonation studies in all districts except Büyükorhan and the three central districts, the Metropolitan Municipality accelerated the work in Yıldırım district. A microzoning survey report based on the zoning plan of approximately 6 thousand 135 hectares of land in Yıldırım is being prepared. Within the scope of the work, in line with the opinions of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, 20 drillings at a depth of 214 meters, 10 drilling wells at a depth of 170 meters, 300 seismic refraction-masw and 300 microtremor studies will be carried out in the said area. While the work has been completed at 384 out of 53 drilling points, drilling activities continue. Samples taken from boreholes are examined in a laboratory environment. 15 fault studies along the segments affecting the study area and the surrounding areas will be carried out together with academicians who are experts in their fields. After the field studies are completed, the microzonation survey report will be sent to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change for approval.

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş, together with Yıldırım Mayor Oktay Yılmaz, examined the ongoing ground investigation works in Çınarönü District. Stating that drilling works have been completed in 384 percent of the 30 determined points, Mayor Aktaş noted that Yıldırım, in particular, received intense immigration after the 1950s and 60s, grew hormonally with illegal buildings, and that zoning plans were not fully prepared in this sense. Stating that they aim to solve the issue in Yıldırım as a whole rather than solving the issue with a few transformations in the short term, Mayor Aktaş said, “Of course, we are carrying out transformation works somewhere. We continue those transformations with the geological surveys we conduct locally. But we want to see the whole picture. We had previously completed microzoning studies in Büyükorhan and 3 central districts. "Now we continue our microzoning work in Yıldırım district," he said.
It is not nice to talk about earthquakes
Stating that they continue the work in cooperation with Yıldırım Municipality, Mayor Aktaş said, “These studies are very important in order to get to know our city in this sense and to create a good infrastructure, especially for the regions that need transformation. Maybe it is not nice to talk about the earthquake, but unfortunately we were faced with this painful reality because the earthquake was not talked about in Hatay, Nurdağı, Kahramanmaraş, or was talked about less or the necessary precautions were not taken. Therefore, in order to avoid new pain, it is an inevitable fact to create infrastructure related to the transformation of the city as a whole. Earthquakes may happen every 50, 100, or 200 years, but the pain and wounds they leave behind last just as long as 100 years. Earthquakes cannot be prevented, but it is in our hands to overcome the earthquake with the least damage with the measures we take. "This is exactly the work we do," he said.
Yıldırım Mayor Oktay Yılmaz also thanked Mayor Aktaş for their support to this microzoning study covering the entire district. Noting that, as Yıldırım Municipality, they carry out ground surveys in all urban transformation projects, Yılmaz said, “But this study is very important as it covers the whole city. All transformation projects in the future will be carried out together with these studies. Currently, transformation works are being carried out in more than 10 points of Yıldırım, both by the Metropolitan Municipality and with the initiatives of us and the private sector. "Hopefully, we will continue to increase these efforts in the coming days," he said.
