Engin Ardıç was born in Trabzon, where his parents, who were civil servants, were employed. His mother's name is Vesile and his father's name is Mustafa Şevki Ardıç. His grandfather, Saip Efendi, was a member of the Workers and Farmers Socialist Party of Turkey, a socialist party founded during the Turkish War of Independence. His grandfather, Cemil Efendi, carried out the smuggling of arms and ammunition to Anatolia in Kasımpaşa in the same years. He graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1970 and from Boğaziçi University, Department of Political Sciences in 1976.
