Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen made an assessment regarding the medication regulation of psychiatric patients during Ramadan.

Stating that psychiatric patients who fast during Ramadan should not delay their medication, Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen emphasized that those who have all kinds of diseases during Ramadan should continue the drugs they use constantly.

Stating that the use of drugs is very important in psychiatric diseases, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen said, “If their illness has gotten much better, then they can keep their fast by using it in sahur and iftar. However, if fasting increases the disease and the person becomes restless, then fasting should be put aside. If you drink during the day, it is not possible to change the place of it. Therefore, you should not fast. In other words, this situation changes depending on whether the disease is good, advanced or mild. The situation changes according to the time of the drugs. We can have breakfast in the morning by taking sahur, but if there is medicine during the day or if there is medicine that is taken when there is trouble, then it is not possible to fast.” said.

Noting that patients receiving psychiatric treatment can fast according to their health status, Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen said, “Psychiatric patients can be nervous and restless. If these patients become very nervous and restless, they should not fast. If the person says I am calm and holding well, he can fast. It should be adjusted according to the patient's condition. I inform the patients that you can hold them or not, depending on their condition. I usually advise them to try for a few days, if they can succeed, the person should continue, if not, the fast can be left there.” he said.
