Last Section 50 Delivery from STM to REIS Class Submarines

The final delivery of "Section 50", the head section containing submarine torpedo tubes (main guns), produced for the first time in Turkey under the engineering and coordination of STM with national resources, was made to the Gölcük Shipyard Command. The last “Section 50” produced for Reis Class submarines will be integrated into TCG SELMANREİS.

Another important delivery has been completed in the New Type Submarine Project (YTDP), initiated by the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). While the first submarine of the project, PİRİREİS, started sea tests on 6 December, STM signed the new delivery of the "Section 50", the head part of which the submarine torpedo tubes (main weapons) can be produced by only a few countries in the world.

The fourth and final delivery of “Section 50”, which was produced for the first time in Turkey with domestic and national resources, under the engineering and coordination of STM, at Gürdesan Gemi Makinaları Sanayii Ticaret A.Ş., was completed successfully. One “Section 1” produced for Reis Class submarines was delivered to Gölcük Shipyard Command by sea. The fourth and final Section 50 section, manufactured and delivered in Turkey, will be integrated into TCG SELMANREİS, the last submarine of the project. STM and Gürdesan delivered the first Section 50 delivery to be integrated into TCG MURATREİS in September 50, and the second and third deliveries to be integrated into TCG AYDINREİS and TCG SEYDİALIREİS in July 2021.

Demir: We will continue to localize critical systems

President of the Turkish Presidency of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir said, “We continue our efforts to strengthen our country's strength in the Blue Vatan. With the participation of our STM engineers and our local industry, we have completed the final delivery of the head parts, which we produce locally, for the Reis Class submarines, including the torpedo tubes. May this last delivery for the Reis Class, which will be the most modern submarine platform of our country, be beneficial to our country, our Navy and the Blue Homeland. We will continue to take our localization steps in critical systems.”

Smiling: We Exceeded Our Targeted Locality Rate

STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz stated that the localization of the submarine torpedo section is a historical success and said, “In this context, as STM, we completed and delivered our first Section 50 production last year, and the second and third productions in July this year. We transferred the fourth and last Section 50 to Gölcük Shipyard Command. Although it is the first time that this level of production is being carried out, all deliveries were made on time, without disrupting the project, with the knowledge, experience and superior effort of STM engineers. We are also proud that we have succeeded in exceeding the targeted localization rate for Reis Class Submarines, which will increase the deterrence of our Navy in the Blue Homeland. I congratulate all my teammates and stakeholders who contributed to this project, which is an important experience gain on the way to national submarine production.”

It will fire 8 guided missiles

Section 50, the most critical part of the Reis class submarines, the last modern submarine platform of the Turkish Navy, contains submarine main weapons and systems that enable the firing of guided missiles. Thanks to the Section 50 produced, Reis Class Submarines are armed with 8 533mm torpedo tubes. Within the scope of the project, it is planned to deliver 6 Reis Class Submarines. The section containing the torpedo tubes of the first two submarines was manufactured by the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the main contractor of the project. The Section 3 section, which will be located in the 4rd, 5th, 6th and 50th submarines, was manufactured in Gürdesan for the first time in Turkey under the main subcontractor of STM.

STM plays a critical role in Reis Class Submarines

STM plays an important role in the production of Reis Class Submarines. Revealing its design competence and experience in submarine for YTDP, STM, within the scope of Section 50; provides all the coordination of the project. Making the construction plans, checking the assembly, making them ready for delivery and following the delivery stages are carried out by the expert teams of STM. Apart from Section 50, in STM, YTDP; carries out design, engineering and system integration activities. Contributing to the localization of the materials, devices/systems to be used in shipbuilding, STM has the domestically manufactured non-submarine resistant boat blocks and some GRP units (Submarine Composite Superstructure) to increase the domestic contribution in the project.

New Type Submarine Project

Within the scope of the needs of the Naval Forces Command, it is aimed to construct 6 Reis Class submarines at Gölcük Shipyard Command with the maximum participation of Turkish industry in order to meet the criteria of the Submarine Operations Concept. Within the scope of the New Type Submarine Project, 6 submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion system, capable of launching many types of torpedoes, missiles and mines, and equipped with weapons against underwater, surface and land targets, are planned to be put into service as of this year. Equipped with the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP), Reis Class submarines will have the opportunity to operate underwater for weeks without coming to the surface. Submarines with low-noise navigation capability will be able to operate in secrecy for a long time. The submarines will have a length of 68 meters, a weight of over 2 thousand tons and a capacity of 40 personnel. The first submarine TCG PİRİREİS, built in Gölcük Shipyard as part of the project, was launched in March 2021. TCG PİRİREİS started its navigational experiences in December 2022. In the project, Hizirreis Submarine Towing and Selmanreis Submarine First Welding Ceremony was held on May 23, 2022 with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The names of the Reis Class Submarines that will serve in the Turkish Naval Forces Command are as follows:

TCG PİRİREİS, TCG HIZIRREİS, TCG MURATREİS, TCG AYDINREİS, TCG SEYDİALIREİS and TCG SELMANREİS.
