Istinye University (ISU) Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Biomedical Engineering Dr. Instructor Member Polen Koçak evaluated the last point reached in cancer treatments.

ISU Biomedical Engineering, which works to develop personalized treatment strategies with the help of nanotechnology, which studies the genetic infrastructure of cancer types and studies on personalized treatment strategies, supported by scientific infrastructure, instead of tailor-made solutions of the health industry in ISU laboratories. Instructor Member Polen Koçak made the following statements about cancer treatments:

“The most important point reached in cancer treatments is the application of personalized medicine applications to cancer patients. Researchers are working on a variety of tactics to develop personalized cancer treatment strategies. These include identifying as many genetic mutations as possible in different cancers, faster and more effective techniques for sequencing tumors, and new methods for more accurately matching patients and developing more targeted therapies. Combining this research and advanced technologies offers potential hope for hard-to-treat patients.”

Stating that the incidence of cancer in Turkey is above the incidence in the world, Koçak gave the following information about cancer data:

“According to the latest statistical data from the Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Public Health, the incidence of cancer in Turkey is slightly higher than the incidence in the world. The average cancer incidence of the West Asian region, which includes our country, is lower than the average of Turkey. Cancer incidences in countries with a high level of development such as Central and Eastern Europe and America are higher than in our country. While the age-standardized cancer rate in Turkey was 2017 in men in 259,2, it was 187,0 in women (per 100.000). According to the cancer statistics of 2017, it is estimated that 180.288 people have been diagnosed with cancer in our country. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in men. Among the cancers related to tobacco and tobacco products in men, the number of cases attributed to tobacco use is estimated to be 16.781, and tobacco-related cancers continue to maintain their importance in men. The most common type of breast cancer in women. One out of every four women's cancers remains this type, and a total of 19.211 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in one year.”

Pointing out that more than half of the patients in lung cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage, Koçak said, “The number of cases attributed to obesity is estimated to be around 6.707 in total. Cancers caused by obesity mostly affect women. Colorectal cancer ranks third in both men and women. Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in childhood cancer. In the 15-24 age group, testicular cancer in men and thyroid cancer in women are in the first place. In lung cancer, more than half of the patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Only 11 percent of breast cancers are distant-stage cancer cases. Most of the uterine corpus and cervical cancers, which are female cancers, are caught at an early stage.
