The seven-month preparatory meetings of the Second Century Economics Congress, which will be held by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality between 15-21 February 2023 with the slogan "We are building the Turkey of the Future", have come to an end. After the stakeholder meetings, which were held between August 10 and December 1, 2022 and constitute the first phase of the congress, the second stage expert meetings in the congress work will end with the “We See the Future” meeting. Last meeting, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç SoyerIt started at the IzQ Entrepreneurship Center hosted by .

We embarked on an exciting and promising journey

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, said that the economics congress, which has been going on for a long time, continues as an extremely exciting and hopeful journey. Minister Tunç SoyerIn his speech, in which he mentioned the reasons for organizing an economics congress, he said: “For us, there were three main motivation points in starting out. First; A century ago, when Istanbul was under occupation, when the Lausanne negotiations were not completed or even interrupted, 5 and a half months have passed since the Izmir fire, when the Republic was not established, when there were great uncertainties, when people lost hope, a journey is being started to determine the economic policies of the new state to be established. There is a parliament in Ankara, but Mustafa Kemal Atatürk leaves neither his experts nor the parliament the authority and responsibility to do this job. In that snowy winter, he invites delegates from all over Turkey and starts the process of determining economic policies with them.”

common sense emphasis

Pointing out that the search for common wisdom was put forward with a completely civilian initiative a hundred years ago, President Soyer, while starting the studies of the economics congress, explained his second source of motivation with the following words: “The second is the research conducted by a research company. In the research, the question 'What do you dream of your future' is asked to young people between the ages of 18-30. 86% of teens say they have no idea. This shocked and saddened us. Because what kind of future can you envisage in a country that has lost its hope and dream? Something similar to what might happen in a post-war climate is happening right now. In the post-war climate there was a loss of self-confidence, a loss of hope. We wanted to work with the concern that we can create a dream and an expectation for the future by looking at today.”

“We also have something to say”

President Soyer explained the last motivation point in the studies as global crises. Soyer said, “There are global crises, climate, food and energy crises that people face. All of these are the developments we are watching, but won't a voice come out of this ancient geography about all these crises? Just hear, listen and copy and paste? Don't we have anything to say? Can't we be the inspiration we give to this world? These three motivation points took us on this journey. Kazım Karabekir Pasha says 'We are responsible for our future, not our past'. We can inherit not only the bridges, roads and canals we will build, but also a well-designed future. Thank you for sharing our excitement and for your contributions.”
