During pregnancy, many expectant mothers may encounter various pregnancy-related problems. Great care should be taken when there is kidney pain during pregnancy. Stating that kidney stones in pregnancy are frequently seen, Kartal Kızılay Hospital, Department of Urology Doctor Assoc. Dr. M. Tolga Gülpınar said, “Urinary stones can cause pain during pregnancy, infections, the need for hospitalization from time to time, and even premature birth.”

Kidney stones are among the most common diseases in our country. Kartal Kızılay Hospital, Department of Urology Doctor Assoc. Dr. M. Tolga Gülpınar warned about the formation of kidney stones and the issues to be taken care of in pregnant women. Dr. Gülpınar said, “The risk of stone formation does not increase during pregnancy and approximately one out of 150 pregnant women gets stone disease. However, it would be appropriate for those with known stone disease to be careful and take precautions. When stone disease is suspected during pregnancy, some difficulties are experienced in diagnosing. The examinations such as x-ray, pyelography, and especially computed tomography that provide the most detailed information, which are often used in the diagnosis of stone disease, cause problems in both maternal and child health as they contain radiation.

Get a doctor's check-up before a planned pregnancy

Stating that the most appropriate imaging method in the diagnosis of stone disease in pregnant women is ultrasonography, Assoc. Dr. M. Tolga Gülpınar, “However, ultrasound cannot give very detailed information and kidney swelling (hydronephrosis), which can be seen normally in pregnant women, may not be distinguishable from stone disease. For this reason, women with previous stone disease should have their urological check-ups before they become pregnant, if there is a planned pregnancy. Early diagnosis greatly eliminates the possibility of encountering nasty surprises.

Treatment methods

Kartal Kızılay Hospital, Department of Urology Doctor Assoc. Dr. M. Tolga Gülpınar said, “Our first choice for women who drop stones during pregnancy is to drop the stone themselves if the size of the stone is appropriate. However, dropping stones is one of the most painful diseases known. Since the drugs used during pregnancy will also affect the child, the pain of the pregnant may not be sufficiently relieved. Shock wave therapies (ESWL), which we frequently use in the treatment of stone disease, cannot be used during pregnancy. For patients with large stones or those whose pain cannot be adequately relieved, ureterorenoscopic stone therapy is a savior. This method is applied in the operating room environment and with anesthesia. The stone is reached by means of a camera system advanced through the urinary tract. No incision is made on the abdomen of the patient, it is a completely closed application. After reaching the stone with the help of the camera, the stone is broken with the laser and the patient's pain is relieved quickly. Pain-related blood pressure increases and the risk of premature birth are reduced. After the pregnancy is terminated, it is possible to follow up the patient with detailed radiological examinations.
