We are experiencing the biggest earthquake in the history of the republic

Geology Professor Doğan Perinçek was the guest of the “Midday Day” program presented by Özgür Özbakır at CRI Türk and made statements about the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş.

The highlights of Perinçek's statements are as follows:

“A 370 KM AREA AFFECTED”

“One of the disaster areas that I described as 'critical' on February 4 was Kahramanmaraş Pazarcık. This earthquake did not come as a surprise, but I did not expect it to affect such a large area. We are experiencing the biggest earthquake in the history of the republic. An area of 370 km from Hatay to Elazig was affected.

“Both Faults Produce EARTHQUAKE”

This earthquake happened on the circular fault. The Circu fault is a branch of the Eastern Anatolian fault stretching from Elazig to Maraş. It separates from the main branch around Çelikhan and extends to the west. We had an earthquake on it. Now, further west, the Savron fault has been triggered. After the Savron fault triggered, I started to worry about the faults triggering east of the earthquake area. These earthquakes did not occur only on the East Anatolian fault. Earthquakes take place in the area where we call the Ölüdeniz fault, a fault that enters our borders from the Red Sea to Israel, Lebanon, Syria and then Hatay meets the East Anatolian fault. Both faults produce earthquakes.

“After-shocks WILL CONTINUE FOR 2-3 MONTHS”

It's hard to predict what will happen next. The pluses of these earthquakes will continue for at least 2-3 months. There may be aftershocks around 6 pm because a very large area was affected and a significant portion of the faults were triggered.
