Tatar, These Aftershocks Will Continue for a Long Time
Earthquake

Orhan Tatar, General Manager of Earthquake and Risk Reduction of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), explained the latest situation regarding the earthquakes.

Some of the headlines from Tatar's speech are as follows: “After this earthquake, nearly 100 or even more than 100 aftershocks occurred, 3 of which were above the magnitude of 6.6, the largest of which was 6,6. Another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6, centered in Elbistan, just occurred within the borders of Kahramanmaraş. Both of these are earthquakes that trigger each other independently of each other. There is a serious earthquake activity in the region. These aftershocks will continue for a long time. After such a big main shock up to 7.7, 7.6 after the big main shocks, aftershocks up to one six magnitudes, 6.7, 6.6, 6.5, will continue in the region. We estimate that these aftershocks will continue for at least a year after an earthquake of this magnitude.

The most important point here is that we ask our citizens not to enter damaged buildings. This is very important because after the first main shock, the buildings that get tired after the aftershocks of 6 or more magnitude and 5 and above after the first main shock may be damaged in the aftershocks of 5 or more that may occur, even if they have survived in those earthquakes. This is what we ask our citizens to do. We need to get through this process in the most accurate way, especially by not living in damaged, slightly damaged, moderately damaged, heavily damaged buildings, staying away from them, especially in assembly areas, and taking into account the warnings of the officials.

The most recent earthquake in the region was an earthquake that occurred in 1114. Therefore, for many years, this region was a region that resisted as a seismic void.

It is extremely important for us that we ask members of the press and our citizens not to give credence to any statement other than the official statements we made here.”
