In the statement made by the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice, it was announced that 12 of the 3 criminal convicts and detainees who were injured in the incidents during the escape attempt in Hatay T Type Closed Prison lost their lives.

In Hatay and Maraş, where heavy destruction was experienced due to the earthquake, the riots started by the prisoners in Hatay T Type Closed Prison and Maraş Türkoğlu No. 1 L Type Closed Prison, demanding their transfer to prisons in safe areas were suppressed by the violence of the security forces.

In the statement made by the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice regarding the violence experienced in Hatay T Type Closed Prison, it was stated that 3 prisoners lost their lives and 12 prisoners were injured. The statement described the prisoners' revolt as an attempt to escape:

In the statement, it was stated that the escape attempt was prevented and the fire was extinguished as a result of the intervention.

“During the intervention to the events, 12 judicial convicts and detainees were injured, and 3 of the injured who were transferred to the hospital died. Inspectors of the Ministry of Justice and controllers of the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses were appointed by our Minister of Justice to investigate the incident, and a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated. Allegations of rape of female convicts/detainees in the penitentiary and other baseless accusations are completely untrue.”

In the statement, it was stated that the convicts and detainees were transferred to other penitentiary institutions due to the destruction of the penitentiary institution as a result of the aforementioned events.
