With the importance that Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer gives to agricultural production, the Metropolitan continues to pave the way for agriculture and meet the demands of farmers. The 40-kilometer connection road between Sömek and Hüseyinler Neighborhoods, which are 8 kilometers from the center of Silifke, has been asphalted. Producers living in the region, whose livelihood is agriculture, save both fuel and time.

Within the scope of the work carried out under the coordination of the Metropolitan Municipality Road Construction, Maintenance and Repair Department and the Headman's Office, the teams completed the construction of double-layer emulsion asphalt on the connection road connecting Sömek, which is the most used by the farmers, to Hüseyinler. Thanks to the average road width of 7,5 meters, large and small vehicles can now travel side by side with ease. Producers growing products such as tomatoes, eggplant, kiwi, cauliflower and broccoli got rid of dusty and rough roads and got clean and comfortable roads. While the producers are transporting their products to Silifke or Erdemli Hali, thanks to the new roads, 10 kilometers less travel is made and fuel costs are also reduced.

Erdem: “With the work done, the path of the producers was shortened by 10 kilometers”

Metropolitan Municipality Silifke Coordination Branch Manager Atilla Erdem talked about the work done and said, “Our connection road connecting Sömek to Hüseyinler is one of the roads most often used by farmers. If the product produced in Sömek District goes to Silifke or if the product produced in Hüseyinler District goes to Erdemli Hali, the road is shortened by 10 kilometers. The livelihood of this region is entirely farming. It was a beautiful road with a length of 8 kilometers and a width of approximately 7,5 kilometers, where 2 vehicles could easily pass.”

Muhtar Ünver: “We save both time and fuel thanks to the road”

Sömek Neighborhood Headman Cengiz Ünver stated that with the construction of the connection road between Sömek Neighborhood and Hüseyinler, the road used by the farmers became comfortable and the products were transported easily and in a shorter time, and said, “This road was open before, but it was very bad. Although there was a lot of commuting, vehicles could not commute. Since this is an agricultural region, we asked our President Vahap Seçer. Thankfully, he didn't break us. At the moment, our people are very satisfied. Especially kiwi, tomato and eggplant are grown here in summer. Large cars were not allowed to carry these products due to the unevenness of the road. Even the truck is coming in now. A very good service has been done to our village. With the shortening of the road, we also saved fuel.”

“We can easily reach our lands”

Hasan Dölek, a farmer living in Sömek Neighborhood, told that they used a narrow stabilized road before the work of the Metropolitan Municipality. Dölek said, “We usually grow tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli. This road was a great advantage for us to go down to the beach. We had been traveling through Cambazlı before and it was quite difficult. From here, you can go down to Kızkalesi. It's closer now. From here, we descend to Hüseyinler as we wish and reach our lands easily.”

Mehmet Kurt, who makes a living from farming, stated that the cars were constantly breaking down before the road was built and said, "Thank God, we are now rid of dust and malfunctions. Our goods and vegetables were saved. God bless,” he said.

Ahmet Eser, who has been engaged in farming for many years, said, “This was a stabilized road before. When you went by car or motorbike, you were driving in dust. Needless to say now, it already appears. We can go and go comfortably,” he said.
