Muş announced the foreign trade figures for January at the press conference held at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Commerce with Mustafa Gültepe, President of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM).
Expressing that the export figures are an indicator of the success achieved in a climate of such uncertainty in the world and in an environment where export expectations for Turkey are falling, Muş said that contrary to expectations, Turkey continues on its way in industrial production and exports with firm steps.
Pointing out that the political stability achieved in Turkey is behind these achievements, Muş used the following expressions:
“This political stability has opened the horizon to our exporters with policies that pave the way for exports and our exporters have delivered Turkish goods to large geographies of the world. At this point, we are making great efforts to increase the range of our exports. In order to find new markets in this direction, we continue our commercial diplomacy activities intensively. Recently, we made a very useful visit to Venezuela with the TIM delegation. Here, I would like to emphasize that the meetings we have with our interlocutors and the bilateral business meetings with business people are extremely beneficial. We will continue these activities that will pave the way for our exports in the coming period. We will try our best to solve whatever problem our exporter has in any country. “Gold imports increased by 733 percent”
Stating that he has no doubt that Turkey will achieve success in 2023 as well, Muş said:
“Our exports continued the momentum it gained last year in the first month of this year and reached the highest export value in January. In January, our exports increased by 10,4 percent compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to 19,4 billion dollars. With the effect of the sharp increase in energy and commodity prices, our imports amounted to 33,7 billion dollars in January, while more than a quarter of this figure is due to energy imports. The effect of the high course of energy prices on our imports is better understood when we look at the energy import data of the past years. As a matter of fact, energy imports in January increased by 2021 percent compared to the same month of 238 and reached the level of 8,8 billion dollars.
Explaining that the recent increase in gold imports was also effective in the increase in imports, Muş said that in January, total gold imports increased by 733 percent compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 5,1 billion dollars.
“The global automotive market is reviving”
Pointing out that the global automotive market started to revive with the easing of the problems related to the supply of semiconductors in various sectors last year, Muş said:
“It is noteworthy that this situation is reflected in our automotive imports as an increase of 47 percent. On the other hand, the negative effects of the parity (euro/dollar) on our foreign trade figures continue. Due to the parity effect, less exports worth approximately 500 million dollars were realized in January. While sharing our foreign trade data, I would like to open a separate parenthesis for our service exports. Our service revenues increased in the January-November 2022 period with the high contribution of travel and transportation revenues and amounted to 83,6 billion dollars.”

Stating that a difficult period is expected in the global economy in the coming period, Muş said that the weak demand seen especially in the European economies, which is Turkey's largest trading partner, poses a risk on exports.
Stating that it is important for exporters to turn to alternative markets in this context, Muş said, “First of all, we continue our efforts to ensure that Turkey is the first choice for the Middle East and Gulf countries in terms of supply of goods and services, whose incomes and therefore demands are rising due to rising energy prices. We accelerated our commercial diplomacy activities with Middle Eastern countries. As the Ministry, while we strive to make our country a production and supply center for Europe, we continue to stand by them in directing our exporters to different markets, especially the Far Countries Strategy.” said.

Muş stated that Export Development Joint Stock Company (İGE AŞ), which started its operations in March last year and strengthened its capital structure in August, facilitated access to finance for exporters who have collateral problems.
“İGE AŞ, which is a revolutionary application in terms of financing exports, has provided guarantees for over 21 billion liras of loans to date, giving our exporters a breath of fresh air in terms of financing. Although a very short time has passed since its establishment, İGE AŞ has become a very important resource for our exporters with its strengthening structure. I believe that IGE AŞ will be much stronger in the coming years and will have a huge structure that will make a greater contribution to the Turkish economy.”
