İBB leads the logistics sector to make Istanbul more resilient to climate change and to support carbon-free transportation. With the participation of industry stakeholders, the DECARBOMILE project, supported by the European Union Horizon Europe (Horizon Europe), is put into practice. With the project, which will be implemented for the first time in Turkey, the logistics sector will make deliveries with carbon-free transportation vehicles for 18 months.

As of September 1, 2022, the European Union started the project called DECARBOMILE on the 'urban consolidation center' supported within the scope of Horizon Europe. Pilot country of Turkey, Germany, France and Spain; Italy, Denmark, Poland and Bulgaria have partner country status in the project, in which Spain, Estonia, Belgium and Bosnia and Herzegovina are also satellite countries. The project aims to provide the same service from a single center with fewer vehicles and green transportation methods for companies that carry out logistics operations from different sectors. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), in the project, which makes significant contributions to the decarbonization process of cities; Smart City provides support with its Transportation Planning, Logistics Management and Terminals directorates.

TARGET CARBON NEUTRAL IN LOGISTICS

Within the scope of the project in which 10 institutions from 31 different countries participated, DECARBOMILE Stakeholder Engagement Workshop was held hosted by IMM. At the meeting attended by universities, associations and stakeholders from logistics companies, the current situation and future of transportation with electric vehicles that do not emit carbon emissions were discussed. It was evaluated by people and companies in the sector in the field of urban logistics.

TO BE TESTED

In the next phase of the project, tests on electric cargo bikes and other delivery methods from urban consolidation centers will be carried out with the DECARBOMILE project. In the tests, which are planned to continue for 18 months, deliveries will be made with electric cargo bikes. When the project process is completed, the application will start using green transportation methods from the logistics centers.
