The opening of the first expert meetings, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer made. At the first meeting titled “We agree with each other”, the President Tunç Soyer“The essence of democracy is to settle for one of us,” he said.

The preparatory meetings of the Second Century Economics Congress, which will be held by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality between 15-21 February 2023, continue. Following the Stakeholder Meetings, which constituted the first phase of the congress between August 10 and December 1, 2022, the first expert meeting in this second phase is held under the title “We Agree with Each Other”.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality at St. Vukolos Church Tunç SoyerIn the meeting hosted by CHP İzmir Deputy Özcan Purçu, representatives of communities with different economic, social and cultural characteristics, 48 experts working on democracy and human rights came together. At the meeting, the participants asked, “How can we establish a country that is more compatible with each other in Turkey of the second century?” sought the answer to his question.

Soyer: Our responsibility is heavy

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, the President Tunç Soyer“The second century of the republic excites everyone. The first mayor, the first council members, the first headmen of the Second Century… This title and this pride also imposes a great responsibility on us. We are aware of this. One of those responsibilities is to re-establish the Economic Congress of our ancestors a century ago as the Second Century Economics Congress in the second century.”

The economic policies of the Republic were determined in the congress

Stating that Izmir is called the "city of liberation and establishment", President Soyer continued his speech as follows: "The Izmir Economic Congress was a burned down and destroyed city after 3,5 years of occupation, when there was no Republic, before the Lausanne Peace Treaty was not finished, and when Istanbul was under occupation. It is a congress that was held before the ashes of the city were lifted. This congress convened to determine the economic policies of the Republic.”

“We will bring together the perspectives brought by the differences”

Explaining that the congress, which was held to determine the economic policies of the future in the political climate of that day, was held with the same logic today, President Soyer said, “In today's political climate, we will determine the economic policies of the future, not to find solutions to today's political problems. That's why we can talk about problems from a wider perspective, with a broader vision, instead of being trapped in today's shallow waters. We can also call it the democracy table because we think that the essence of democracy is to be satisfied with each other.”

President Soyer, who gave messages of unity and solidarity at the meeting, said, “We want to discuss the economic policies that bring us together rather than the reasons that separate us from each other. That's why we think that a lot of common ground can be created by meeting the perspectives that the differences will bring.”

Congratulations to President Soyer from Purçu

CHP İzmir Deputy Özcan Purçu also mentioned the importance of the studies of the Economics Congress. Stating that Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk organized the Economics Congress considering all segments at that time, Purçu said, “Atatürk achieved success in this study. He made an important revolution for the Republic of Turkey. I also felt that we should prioritize justice and equality here. I congratulate our President for doing such a work.”

Recommendations will be made for delegates

48 experts will examine the three declarations put forward in previous stakeholder meetings conceptually and academically and will make recommendations for the delegates who will meet again at the main congress. All the discussions to be held at the meeting will contribute to the development of a strong democracy, which is necessary for “harmony with one another”, one of the economic foundations of the Turkey of the second century.

Four expert meetings will be held

The final texts prepared as a result of the Farmer, Worker and Industrialist-Merchant-Tradesman Meetings at the first stage of the congress were shared with the public. The Expert Meetings, which constitute the second phase, will continue until the first week of February. Expert meetings will be held on January 20, titled “We Return to Our Nature”, on January 25 “Understanding Our Past”, and on February 4 “We See the Future”. Following the Expert Meetings, policy proposals that will shape the new century will be shared with the whole of Turkey at the Second Century Economics Congress between February 15-21, 2023.
