Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract worth approximately 1 million euros with Metroselskabet for the mid-life fleet modernization of the M2 and M30 metro trains in Copenhagen, Denmark. The program includes the renewal of 20 metros that have been operating in the city for nearly 34 years.

Mid-life modernization will begin immediately for a period of approximately three years. Alstom will perform the services at its workshops in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Trainset modernization includes internal and external refurbishment as well as parts replacement. It will improve the performance of 34 subway trains and extend their life by 10 years. This will result in a better experience for commuters on the Danish metro network. When the modernization project is completed, the train sets will be allocated to Metroselskabet's M1 and M2 lines.

“This is our first major project with Metroselskabet and we are happy to work with them to expand the capacity of the first major driverless metro system in operation in Copenhagen. Although this project is the first of its kind in our local portfolio in Denmark, as the market leader we have great experience from similar modernization projects in Europe. “Our strong commitment to the Danish sustainable mobility sector is further strengthened by this contract,” said Emmanuel Henry, Managing Director of Alstom Denmark.

Rebekka Nymark, Executive Director of Copenhagen Metro, said: “The deliberate choice to modernize existing trains and delay the purchase of new trains allows us to continue our long-standing efforts to minimize our environmental impact and contributes to fulfilling our commitment to provide sustainable mobility. In this context, we are pleased to announce Alstom as our partner in the train refurbishment project for the Copenhagen Metro. “With their expertise in the region, we are confident that once the modernization project is completed, the metro system in Copenhagen will provide a better experience for passengers and improve the performance of metro trains.”
