Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has strengthened the infrastructure of the city for the safe use of electric scooters, which have been increasing in number recently, and their integration with transportation, has made a speed regulation in the e-scooter regulation. With the unanimous decision of UKOME, the maximum speed of electric scooters has been reduced to 20 kilometers per hour.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality made a speed regulation for electric scooters (e-scooters), which are environmentally friendly and easy transportation vehicles. In line with the unanimous decision taken at the Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) meeting, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality unanimously reduced the maximum speed of e-scooters from 25 kilometers per hour to 20 kilometers per hour for the safety of city traffic, pedestrians and scooter drivers. After the decision was taken, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Transportation provided the speed of e-scooters to be reduced with the central system, with a letter sent to 9 institutions serving throughout the city.

Correct and safe use is important

Giving information about the process, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department Head Sibel Özgür said, “The maximum number of e-scooters to be operated throughout İzmir is 15 thousand 929. Currently, approximately 12 thousand e-scooters are actively circulating in our city. We determine the criteria for the correct and safe use of e-scooters with the principles of the regulation. As a result of our technical evaluations, we have taken a decision to reduce the speed of e-scooters for the safety of life and property of our citizens. We have informed the companies for the implementation of this decision. We also have a communication group that includes our municipality, traffic police and e-scooter operators. We are operating the system very actively, especially in issues such as faulty parking.”

Sibel Özgür stated that infrastructure works have been increased in order to adapt e-scooters to urban transportation correctly and safely, and said, “E-scooters, when used correctly and consciously, have a very important place for an environmentally friendly urban transportation. Currently, we have created scooter park areas with a capacity of 20 at 63 points in total on our 2-kilometer coastline stretching from Üçkuyular to Mavişehir and in the inner parts of our city.
