Attention to Common Hand Problem!

Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op.Dr.Alperen Korucu gave important information about the subject. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a progressive disorder involving the first three fingers of one or both hands. It manifests itself with pain, loss of strength and numbness due to the pressure of the median nerve, which is formed in the middle of the wrist and spreads to the first 3 fingers.

Other symptoms of this disease are; increased electricity, especially at night, if the hand tries to open something by turning it or when lifting movements occur, and sometimes pain spreading to the shoulder.

These symptoms occur after the median nerve is compressed in the tunnel present in the area where the transition from the wrist to the hand is formed. Some of the tendons that provide movement to the fingers of the hand move through this tunnel.

The disease may occur more than normal conditions in overweight people, those who use alcohol, diabetes and vascular diseases. Occupational groups prone to the disease are those who actively drive, carpenters, those who wash dishes by hand, those who play tennis or table tennis, those who use computers a lot, in short, those who engage in repetitive movements of the wrist. It may also occur during pregnancy in women. But it is a temporary situation.

For the diagnosis of the disease, the wrist is hit with a reflex hammer. An electric shock (shock)-like response is received from the person's fingers. This is Tinel's sign. Definitive diagnosis can also be provided by EMG test.

Op.Dr.Alperen Korucu said, “In mild patients, it can be treated with various wristbands or splints to give rest to the wrist. Various injections can be made into the tunnel. Injection applications will help to reduce edema in the tunnel, however, the use of wristbands is suitable for this treatment. Surgical treatment is performed in patients who do not respond or who are diagnosed at a late stage. This is an application that can be performed with local anesthesia that does not require hospitalization of the patient.
