TUBITAK ARDEB SUPPORT

The Original Engine Development Project, carried out in partnership with TÜBİTAK Rail Transport Technologies Institute (RUTE), TÜRASAŞ, Marmara University and Unusual Engineering, was supported within the scope of TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1007 Program. The original engine, designed and produced with national means in a short period of 4 years, was presented to the Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu and President of TÜBİTAK Prof. Dr. It was introduced with the participation of Hasan Mandal.

ENGINE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

Speaking at the ceremony held at the TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus, Minister of Industry and Technology Varank stated that they will run the original engine, the first product of the diesel engine family with 1200 horsepower, which was designed from scratch and whose prototype was produced at the Engine Excellence Center, and said, “In this center, land, railway, maritime, generator and private We can both develop engines suitable for purpose-built use and carry out extensive tests.” said.

Minister Varank stated that thanks to this infrastructure, companies can successfully continue their work without having to re-establish infrastructures with very high costs and without sending them abroad, and said, "Some of the tests in the development process of Togg, which is the apple of our country's eye, were carried out in this center." he said.

DESIGNED FROM ZERO

Underlining that the original engine is the first locomotive engine designed and produced from scratch in Turkey and whose license rights belong to Turkey 100 percent, Varank said, “Moreover, 100 percent of the engine parts produced here were developed here, and 90 percent of them are also in our country. produced.” said.

EUR 17,5 BILLION MARKET

Karaismailoğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, noted that as a result of the studies and plans, there is a market of 2035 billion euros only for railway vehicles in Turkey until 17,5, and said, “The infrastructure of this, together with today's original engine, our work on the railways, TCDD and the private sector are very important. Together with the developments, we are making important studies to meet this need with our own resources.” he said.

CAN BE ADAPTABLE TO GREEN HYDROGEN

The parametric design and production processes of the 160 series diesel engine family, implemented with the Original Engine Development Project, were completed by TÜBİTAK RUTE researchers. The engine family, which emerged in a short period of 4 years, including the pandemic process, draws attention as a technological product with high added value with completely domestic opportunities.

1 HPE POWER IN 44,5 LITER

The developed original engine differs from its counterparts in the field of rail transportation with many features. The original engine draws attention as it is the diesel engine with the highest power obtained from its unit volume. The engine, which produces 1 horsepower from a 44,5 liter engine volume, has the material, design and cooling system that can withstand 230 bar pressure in the cylinder. With these values, it stands out among its competitors as a product that sets the upper limits in its class.

BEST IN CLASS

The original engine was designed from the ground up for locomotives. The national engine, whose intellectual and industrial property rights, as well as license rights, belongs to TÜBİTAK, was planned in 3 different configurations. The 160-cylinder 8 horsepower engine, the first product of the 1200 series engine family design, meets the carbon emission limits set on a global scale. Compared to the engines in its class, it distinguishes itself from its competitors with its environmentally friendly, efficient and sustainable design. While the engine produces 5,000 newtonmeters (Nm) of power at its maximum torque point, it is shown among the best in its class with its fuel consumption value below 200 (gram kilowatt-hour) g/kWh.

COOPERATION WITH DOMESTIC SUPPLIERS

Within the scope of the project, where TCDD is the customer institution, technical drawings of more than 3600 parts of the original engine were created with local suppliers by interviewing more than a hundred suppliers in our country. Almost all of the engine parts were produced by Turkish SMEs. Thanks to this project, a large collaborative workspace and knowledge base was created.

BOTH CHEAP, QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL

Working with domestic suppliers on the project has also significantly reduced the costs of the original engine family. Thanks to the production of casting molds with additive manufacturing management, there is no need for molds for a long time and high cost. Thus, TÜRASAŞ, the main stakeholder of the project, has a cheap, high quality and environmentally friendly engine compared to its imported counterparts.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL: HYDROGEN AND AMMONIA

The original engine draws attention as a platform where the technologies of the future can be applied. The original engine with a sustainable and environmentally friendly design can work with alternative biofuels, which is one of the proposed solutions to the climate crisis. In addition, within the scope of the green agreement to which Turkey is a party, hydrogen, which will be the most important energy source for zero carbon emissions, will be used as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. With this vision, studies have started to use hydrogen and ammonia as fuel in the original engine. Thus, Turkey took an important step towards becoming a pioneer in the field of hydrogen engine, which is not yet commercially available in the world.
