The seventh of the 'International Automotive Engineering Conference - IAEC', which brings together local and foreign experts in their fields in Turkey every year, was held in Istanbul. Sabancı University hosted this year's two-day conference, the main theme of which is sustainability. Automotive Industry Exporters Association (OIB), Automotive Industry Association (OSD), Automotive Technology Platform (OTEP), Vehicle Supply Manufacturers Association (TAYSAD) in cooperation with the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) and Organized under the gold sponsorship of Tofaş, the organization hosted many experts from Turkey and the world. The silver sponsors of the event were Tisan and A2MAC1, while Cavo, Infotron and Vestel supported the conference with bronze sponsorship.

“IAEC'22″ with the main theme of “Sustainability”

International Automotive Engineering Conference – IAEC 2022 was opened by Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Gunduz Ulusoy did it.

Emphasizing that the primary target for climate change is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial period, Ulusoy said, “To achieve this target, it is vital to achieve the target of zero carbon emissions in 2050. The automotive industry has a critical role to play in achieving this target. Exhaust emissions of automobiles, trucks and light commercial vehicles constitute approximately 0 percent of the carbon emissions of all mobility. This corresponds to 75 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. In other words, it is about 6 percent of the world's carbon emissions. Even these few statistics are enough to show us how the automotive industry and sustainability are intertwined. In this respect, it is necessary to try to interpret and influence sustainability in the automotive industry not as the constraints that have to be complied with through laws and regulations, but as the elements of a change, a new environment in which the industry can develop and sustain its life. We can say that this process of change is the biggest transformation in the automotive industry since the transition to mass production at the beginning of the twentieth century. This transformation brings opportunities as well as risks. New playgrounds are opened for those who can benefit," he said.

Stating that they added a session called Formula Student to the second day program to arouse the interest of the students in the sector and motivate them, Prof. Dr. Gündüz Ulusoy noted that student teams from 4 universities had the opportunity to exhibit their electric car works until the end of the conference.

“We only have 20 years to transform!”

Speaking after the opening, Frank Menchaca, Head of Sustainable Mobility Solutions of SAE International, said that sustainability is of critical importance for the future of mobility. Expressing that there has been a great change in the industry with technologies such as electrification, Frank Menchaca said, “This changes everything. Supply chain, engineering, business is even changing the way we run and lead our companies. If we consider the last industrial revolution; It began around 1700. We had 250 years to experience the last industrial revolution. We have 20 years to experience this transformation! "This is a tremendous challenge, but also a tremendous opportunity," he said.

“Coal use should end by 2030”

Emphasizing that the sector with the highest greenhouse gas emissions in the USA, with 2020 percent, according to 27 data, is transportation, Frank Menchaca said:

“This ratio should be 25 percent worldwide. The challenge ahead is to take this transportation sector and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. This is a huge task. We also have a number of tools to consider this. Such as electricity, hydrogen, biofuels and biomass. And then we need to think about the infrastructure that will be needed. We have separated our way of thinking here. About how to do it. I will describe the different ways to reach net zero. There is high electricity. So we really get used to real electric vehicles very easily. Electricity uses renewable energy. And then there is the status quo, which is not acceptable! We have several different scenarios. Net zero emissions can be achieved by using each of these tools and each of these pathways. The key point here is; There needs to be some very big key changes in the US. We should have stopped using coal by 2030. Natural gas is one of the USA's largest export items. We need to reduce that by 2040. We need to increase our share of renewable energy. If we are talking about high electrification, it means 76 percent less oil and gas compared to 2020. If there is a slightly less high electrification; is 64 percent less. It also decreases as the share of renewable energy increases. It drops to 56 percent. If it is purely renewable energy, then there is very little fossil fuel left. This is a radical change for me. It is as radical a change as the first industrial revolution that began in 1750.”

“The biggest problem is the charging infrastructure!”

Expressing that there are approximately 2020 million electric vehicles in the USA in 5.2, Frank Menchaca stated that this means only a 2 percent share. Emphasizing that the number of electric vehicles will reach 2030 million by 49 and increase its share to 17 percent, Menchaca said, “2040 million units and 204 percent share in 64, and 2050 million electric vehicles in 328 to reach net zero. This is more than the total number of vehicles currently. In other words, there is a huge challenge before us and we, as SAE, are trying to contribute to the solution of many problems that come with it.”

Stating that there is a problem of not being able to charge 25-30 percent at the charging stations in the USA, Frank Menchaca said, “I mean, think about this, we are all used to going to the gas pump to get gas, but we can't imagine that the pump works at 75 percent! But there is a reality in the USA that the charging infrastructure fails at a rate of 30 percent. There are lots of uncategorized error codes. One of those companies summed it up as follows. If we don't fix it, no matter how good our plan is, none of our plans will come true because consumers won't accept electric vehicles. In other words, if there is 5 percent left, it does not work when it should be working in our vehicle and when we come to a charging station; How can you trust him?” he said.

“Circular economy addressed!”

IAEC 2022 then continued with the session titled “Circular Economy”. Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Data Analytics Master and Certificate Programs Director Prof. Dr. In the session moderated by Ayşe Başar; Indra Sas CEO Loic-Bey Badge, SSAB Southern Europe, FR & TRMEA Sales Director Pedro M. Rodriguez, MHP Management -und IT- Bertaung GmbH Head of Sustainability and Mobility Transformation Dr. Thilo Greshake and EXITCOM General Manager Murat Ilgar took part as panelists.

Then, Boğaziçi University-CARF Center Deputy Director Prof. Dr. Nilgün Kıran Cılız's “Environmental Impact (Carbon Neutral and Product Life Cycle)” session was held. In this session, Ford-Werke GmhB Director of Sustainability Advanced Regulations and Product Compliance Dr. Wulf Peter Schmidt, AVL Energy and Sustainability Senior Product Manager Martin Rothbart, Bosch Digital Transformation & Sustainability Leader Ersin Öztürk and VALEO Group Foreign Relations and Sustainable Development Manager Jean-Baptiste Burtscher also took part as panelists. The first day of the conference ended with the session titled “Digital Transformation Today and Future Predictions”.

The panelists of the last session are METU-Science and Technology Policy Research Center and Faculty Member of the Department of Economics Prof. Dr. Erkan Erdil, Head of METU BİLTIR Center Prof. Dr. Mustafa İlhan Gökler, Head of Advanced Systems Engineering at Fraunhofer IAO Research Department and Head of PDM/PLM Consulting Center Dipl. – Ing Mehmet Kürümlüoğlu and MEXT Technology Center Group Director Efe Erdem.

“Day two at IAEC 2022!”

Second day of IAEC 2022; At the same time, the Conference Chair is Sabancı University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. It started with Gündüz Ulusoy's speech. Then, as the keynote speaker, McKinsey Company Partner and EMEA Region Automotive and Digital Production Leader Andras Kadocsa made an evaluation with the title “Automotive Industry on the Path to Sustainability”.

Afterwards, the session was held under the title of “Alternative Fuel Vehicles and Infrastructure”, moderated by Sabancı University Istanbul International Energy and Climate Center (IICEC) Director Bora Şekip Güray. In this session, Hydrogen Europe CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, Fraunhofer IAO Institute Director and Head of Intelligent Energy and Mobility Solutions Research Division Dr. –Ing Daniem Stetter, Ford Otosan Electronic Systems and Software Director Alper Tekeli and ACEA Mobility and Sustainable Transportation Director Petr Dolejsi took part as panelists.

The first event of the afternoon was Formula Student. Yıldız Technical University Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. The program inaugurated by Alp Tekin Ergenç continued with the training that included YTU Racing Team, ITU Racing Team, Fırat Racing Team and Sabancı Motorsport.

The last session of the second day and the conference was held under the title of “Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure”. It was moderated by Boğaziçi University Mechanical Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Günay Anlaş, Fev Europe GmbH E-Mobility Systems Department Manager Dr. –Ing Rene Savelsberg, Vestel Senior R&D Program Manager Görkem Özvural, WAT Mobility Power Management Solutions Business Unit Leader Okan Cicimen participated as panelists. The closing of the conference was made by Sabancı University Faculty Member and Conference President Prof. Dr. Gunduz Ulusoy performed it.
