Kilis, Honamlı, Abaza, Kaçkar, Ankara, Aleppo and local goat breeds were taken under protection within the framework of the projects carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The “Reclamation in the Hands of the People National Project” carried out by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Researches of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) within the body of the Ministry since 2005 and in large scale since 2011 is yielding its fruits.

164 technical personnel, including zootechnists, veterinarians, technicians and technicians, are employed in the projects.

Goat breed also plays an important role in small cattle projects. Turkey, which is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of goat presence, has more than 2021 million goats according to 12 data. The goat population, which started to decline in the 1990s and fell to 5 million, reached 12 million with the important support for small cattle breeding, registration and organization practices.

Within the scope of the project, the number of sub-projects in domestic goats, which was 37, increased to 2022 in 10 with the addition of 47 more sub-projects. Thus, 296 heads of broodstock were included in the domestic goat breeding program.

Domestic goat breeds Angora goat, Hair goat, Honamlı goat, Kilis goat, Maltese goat, Damascus goat and Turkish Saanen goat were included in the projects.

At the same time, Kilis, Honamlı, Abaza, Kaçkar, Ankara, Aleppo and local goat breeds, which have a small number of animal assets, were taken under protection within the scope of the project.

The goat is considered to be the most durable animal that can survive in adverse climatic conditions caused by global warming. With the projects, it is aimed that Turkey will soon become a breeding center in goat breeding and reach a level where it can export breeders in order to support rural development in its own geography and surrounding regions.
