KİRİŞCİ: WATER ISSUES, NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Prof. Dr. Vahit Kirişci underlined that they consider the water issue as a national security issue, taking into account the world conjuncture.

Pointing out that the work to be done in the field of 'irrigation management' means planning the future of our country, Kirişci emphasized that it is important to use water sparingly in every field.

Kirişci stated that they have expanded the tubular irrigation systems in order to save irrigation water and to benefit more from the unit water, and made the following assessment:

“We foresee that the piped network system, which is currently 32 percent, will reach around 45-50 percent with new projects and modernization of old irrigation systems. We evaluate the needs of irrigation facilities that cannot be met with maintenance and repair works within the scope of the 'Renewal Project'. Within the scope of the renovation project, conversion to a closed system has been achieved in an area of 37 thousand hectares. Work continues on an area of 1,3 million hectares.

If these areas with classical canal and flue system are turned into piped network, 5,8 billion cubic meters of water will be saved by drip and sprinkler irrigation method according to average water consumption. This corresponds to 13 percent of our water used for irrigation.”

Pointing out the importance of the efficient use of limited water resources in all sectors in harmony with the environment, Minister Kirişci noted that they gave incentives to enable farmers to switch to economical and modern irrigation systems.
