Associate Professor from Memorial Wellness Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Gökhan Özışık gave information about what should be considered for a healthy life.

For a quality and healthy life, one needs to take good care of his body. Eating healthy, an active lifestyle, exercising and doing sports, stress management, adequate water consumption, regular and quality sleep are linked to each other in a chain and ensure staying healthy.

Assoc. Dr. Gökhan Özışık said that a balanced intestinal flora equals a strong immunity.

Özışık stated that the healthy intestinal flora ensures that the immunity is strong, and continued as follows:

“In a healthy intestinal flora, there are probiotic bacteria in the majority, and there are harmful bacteria and yeasts to a certain extent. Unhealthy diet is one of the factors that negatively affect the intestinal flora. Stress, sedentary life, not exercising or excessive exercise, air pollution, insufficient sleep and low water consumption are among the factors that disrupt the intestinal flora. Unconscious drug use, especially antibiotics, also disrupts the balance of intestinal flora. In the deteriorated intestinal flora, beneficial bacteria decrease and harmful bacteria and yeasts multiply. This makes the person susceptible to diseases. Long-term flora imbalances cause chronic diseases. ”

Özışık emphasized the importance of the digestive system.

Assoc. Dr. Gökhan Özışık said, “Digestion is a process that starts from the mouth and the food must be swallowed by chewing it thoroughly. Foods that are not chewed well affect the pre-digestion of the stomach negatively. If the digestion is not good, the absorption of these micronutrients, which are digested and necessary for the proper functioning of the metabolism, cannot be done properly. " said.

Assoc. Dr. Gökhan Özışık stated that consuming too much sugar and processed food causes insulin resistance.

Özışık said, “When too many processed foods and sugars enter the body, the body secretes insulin and leptin hormones in response. These hormones ensure not to have diabetes and not to gain weight against increased sugar load. Continuous exposure to processed foods and sugar turns into a metabolic problem that causes insulin and leptin resistance after a certain limit is exceeded. This disruption in the endocrine system negatively affects all body systems, including the brain. As a result of unhealthy and wrong nutrition, hormones that ensure the continuity of metabolism can become objectionable for the body. Early aging, forgetfulness, depression, chronic diseases are among these negative effects. he said.

Özışık said that hormones ensure the correct functioning of all systems and said, “The imbalance of hormones also affects the brain. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems work like an autopilot in the human brain. These 2 systems are under the control of hormones. The sympathetic system can be compared to a gas system, and the parasympathetic system to a braking and deceleration system, and they must be in balance. If the sympathetic system is used too much, that is, if hormones such as adrenaline, cortisone and growth hormones are used too much, the hormones used by the parasympathetic system such as serotonin, GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid), endorphins that give the body calmness, serenity and happiness remain lower. As a result, the person can become a person who is always tense, irritable, quick-tempered, has difficulty in anger control, has difficulty falling asleep, and cannot think clearly. ” he said.

Özışık, who said that malnutrition and lack of sleep cause stress, said:

“The balanced secretion of hormones ensures that the person spends his/her life in a healthier and higher quality way. Food intolerances, malnutrition, infections, insomnia, anything that stresses the body cause the secretion of stress hormones from the adrenal glands. Adrenaline and cortisol are also called stress hormones. The longer you are exposed to stress, the more cortisol and adrenaline hormones are released. Using these hormones too much can later lead to chronic fatigue syndrome or burnout syndrome. After this point, the body can easily be caught in heart diseases, cancer or diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, which are called neurodegenerative diseases. The constant secretion of stress hormones from the adrenal glands causes less secretion of other hormones.”

Assoc. Dr. Gökhan Özışık said, “A woman who is constantly exposed to stress can go through this period in a difficult and heavy way, especially with the decrease in some hormones in the body with the menopause period.” he ended his statement.
