Shanghai Forum 2022 was held on November 25-26. The forum themed “Asian Responses to Multiple Global Challenges” was attended by government officials and representatives of think tanks, universities and companies from many countries.

Fudan University President Jin Li said at the inauguration yesterday that an ever-developing, prosperous, stable and dynamic Asia is in the common interest of all countries and regions, including China.

Jin Li said, “A global consensus rooted in Asia should be established to address the most pressing and critical problems facing the world, and recommendations should be made on the main topics of global governance at the Shanghai Forum.” said.

Recalling that ASEAN has become the world's fifth largest economy, former US Deputy Secretary of Defense Chas Freeman noted that this greatly benefits from China's opening up, and that China is also the largest trade and investment partner of all its neighbors.

Freeman stated that China could establish a multilateral coordination mechanism to strengthen cooperation between Asian countries in the future.

Former Spanish Foreign Minister and World Trade Organization Secretary General's Chief of Staff Arancha Gonzalez pointed out that China is the critical component of Asia, and expressed that China assumes an important responsibility in reform and opening up, as well as promoting economic stability and development.

Gonzalez suggested applying the ancient wisdom of China against global challenges and advancing the path of multilateralism by adopting soft policies for Asian countries in the face of regional tensions.

Gonzalez noted that Asian countries should prioritize climate change and take steps that benefit China and other countries in the policy-making process.

Jean Tirole, winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics, also emphasized the importance of technological development and innovation in the face of various challenges.
