Seeds preserved in gene banks within the body of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry can be stored for many years by preserving their genetic structure. Breeding studies are carried out with advanced biotechnological methods, with seeds covering local varieties, wild and crossing forms, and economically important endemic plant species.

In order to identify genetic resources containing endemic species at the molecular level, a local and national digital database named 'BARKODTÜRK' was put into practice. Thus, starting from endemic plants, a tissue and DNA bank was created, and studies for recording these species were started.

Studies are carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, in order to protect Turkey's genetic resources, to preserve them for a long time, to ensure their sustainability, to use them in scientific research and to transfer them to future generations. In this context, studies are carried out in 32 gene banks for the collection, preservation, recording, molecular and morphological characterization of our plant, animal, aquatic, microorganism and invertebrate genetic resources, production renewal and making them available to research institutions.

Seeds preserved in gene banks can be stored for many years by preserving their genetic structure when they are collected. With gene banks, it is ensured that the genes needed today or in the future are protected without being eroded by natural or artificial factors. Within the scope of Plant Genetic Resources; The collections in Seed Gene Banks include local varieties, wild and transitional forms, other wild species of economic importance (medicinal aromatic, ornamental, etc.) and endemic plant species.

DOMESTIC AND NATIONAL DIGITAL DATABASE

With the seeds stored in the gene bank, material is provided for research on cultivar development resistant to biotic and abiotic stress conditions in order to be effectively used in breeding studies with advanced biotechnological methods, and not to be affected by global climate change through breeding studies.

2 THEY ARE PROTECTED AT THE GEN BANK

Turkey Seed Gene Bank in Ankara has long, medium and short term storage rooms, especially wild relatives of cultivated plants, local varieties and endemic species, tissue and DNA collection of genetic resources and a herbarium with a capacity of 18 thousand samples preserved at minus 60 degrees. .

Providing materials for scientific research, training and awareness activities are carried out. The National Seed Gene Bank, which was established in İzmir in 1964, preserves the seed samples of local varieties, improved varieties, wild relatives of cultivated plants and other wild species existing in the natural flora, belonging to country-origin plant genetic resources.
