Trainees who received barista training at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory soon achieved their dreams and got a job. Some of them became sought-after employees of world-famous coffee brands, and some contributed to employment by opening a business.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory has made a name for itself with the baristas it has trained. Graduates of the Vocational Factory either become sought-after employees of world-famous coffee brands or contribute to employment by opening a business.

One of these examples is the Yorulmazbaş couple, who have been in the insurance business for 20 years. Betül-Özkan Yorulmazbaş took her place in both the production and marketing sectors thanks to the barista course they attended together. Özkan Yorulmazbaş, who opened a coffee shop in Buca Dumlupınar Neighborhood, said, “I always loved to drink coffee. I always watched the cafes I saw. After 40, I researched and decided that I needed to train as a barista. While continuing our work, I went to the course with my wife. We planned to open a roasting workshop and a cafe. Since we are from Buca, we opened a cafe for students in Dumlupınar Neighborhood. Our client is students. We strive to serve students within their budget. Because we did not pay any money while we were studying at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality”.

Profession Factory has a big share in our success.

Betül Yorulmazbaş, on the other hand, stated that they received a very good education from chef Ercan Turan at the Vocational Factory and said, “We established two coffee companies. We got a patent for local world coffees and Turkish Coffee. We were not satisfied with this, we bought a roasting machine. We are growing every day. We have two coffee outlets and a shop. Profession Factory has a great share in the success of our company”.

Rapid transition from furniture production to coffee industry

Sadık Çakmak, who opened Ingo Cafe after working in the furniture industry for 12 years, said: “My interest in coffee outweighed my passion and I switched to this industry. In order not to start from scratch, I took the first step with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory. Then I went abroad and studied there as well. We opened Ingo Cafe in Bostanlı. We also have a branch in Denizli. We established our production facility in Çiğli Organized Industrial Zone. We produce all our products ourselves, including dessert. I aim to be abroad as soon as possible.”

The sought-after employee of the world-famous coffee brand

Expressing that he decided to do the job that would make him happy during the pandemic, Hakan Bardakçı said, “My passion for coffee pushed me to become a barista. When I met the barista course of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, I was also studying at the Faculty of Architecture at Ege University. The knowledge and teaching style of Ercan chef greatly increased my interest in coffee. My teacher Ercan also supports me in finding a job. Now I work at the Bornova branch of the world-famous coffee brand. I want to open my own cafe in 2 years,” he said.

3rd generation coffee education

The term barista, which is generally used for people who prepare and serve coffee, is actually used to mean "bartender" in Italian. It is a very common profession, especially abroad and in countries where coffee culture is common. This is why the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory Barista Training Program attracts great attention. Young people who want to have a profession, as well as entrepreneur candidates who want to open their own business, participate in the 3rd generation coffee training given by Chef Ercan Turan. The trainees, who attend the 120-hour training without paying any fee, learn all the intricacies of the art of coffee and acquire a valid profession.
