China broke the record of its kind by launching a commercially designed carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.
The CERES-1 Y4 rocket took off yesterday at 14:20 Beijing time and sent 5 small satellites into sun-synchronized orbit (SSO).
The satellites are part of the Jilin-1 Gaofen satellite series. Gaofen is an abbreviation for "high definition" in Chinese. The series is expected to have 2025 satellites by 138, making it the largest commercial observing constellation in China.
China has launched a constellation network for the first time using a commercially designed rocket.
Developed by Beijing-based aerospace company Galactic Energy, the rocket is a four-stage solid-fuel launch vehicle that can be customized for small satellite launch missions.
The rocket with a diameter of 1.4 meters and a length of 19 meters has a takeoff weight of 30 tons.
The final flight was the fourth launch mission for CERES-14, with 1 satellites sent into space.
