98-year-old British actor Leslie Phillips, known for her voice by Harry Potter fans, lost her struggle for life while her treatment continued.

Who is Leslie Phillips?

He was born on April 20, 1924 in London. His father died in 1935. After his father's death, Phillips was sent to Italia Conti Academy at his mother's insistence. There, she attended drama, dance and especially diction classes to lose her Cockney accent. Phillips made her film debut in 1938. Phillips made his film debut in the musical comedy Lassie from Lancashire in 1938. He rose to fame in the 1950s by playing fluid, upper-class comics roles using the slogans “Ding dong” and “Hello”. He starred in the Carry On and Doctor in the House film series, as well as the long-running BBC radio comedy series The Navy Lark. In her later career, Phillips took on dramatic roles, including a BAFTA nominee role with Peter O'Toole in Venus (2006). He gave the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films.

Phillips married his first wife, actress Penelope Bartley (30–1948), on May 1925, 1981. The couple had four children.

In 1962, Phillips began a relationship with actress Caroline Mortimer, who was the daughter of writer Penelope Mortimer and the stepdaughter of John Mortimer, who was a backup in a play starring Phillips. Phillips and Bartley broke up at this point and divorced in 1965.

After his relationship with Mortimer ended, Phillips began a relationship with Australian actress Vicki Luke, with whom he lived for nearly three years.

Phillips moved in with actress Angela Scoular in 1977 and was pregnant by another actor at the time. She raised her son as her own.

In 1981, while touring Australia, Bartley was reported to have died in a fire. Phillips chose to continue production and did not attend his funeral. He later admitted that his family had never forgiven him for this decision.

Phillips married Scoular in 1982. Suffering from bipolar disorder, Scoular attempted suicide in 1992, but the cross-section was not taken.

Phillips received the Freedom of the City of London on 16 November 2010.

His second wife, Scoular, died on April 11, 2011, after ingesting an abrasive drain cleaner and suffering 40% burns to her throat, body, and nutritional system that left her unable to survive. She suffered from bowel cancer and although she was later declared cancer-free, she worried that the cancer had returned. Phillips was too ill to participate in the investigation into Scoular's death three months later. The coroner decided that Scoular's death was not a suicide, but rather that he "killed himself while his mind was out of balance."

Phillips was a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur and appeared as part of the halftime fun during the team's home game against Swansea City on 1 April 2012.

On December 20, 2013, at the age of 89, Phillips married his third wife, Zara Carr.

Phillips suffered two strokes six months apart at the age of 90. He died at his home in London on 7 November 2022, at the age of 98, after a long illness.

Phillips, Queen Elizabeth II. Received the Order of the British Empire from Elizabeth.
