Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) signed a cooperation agreement during the visit of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, His Excellency Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to France. The agreement was signed by Andrew DeLeone, Alstom's Head of Africa, Middle East and Central Asia, and Nurlan Sauranbayev, CEO of KTZ.
Alstom and KTZ strengthened their collaboration for KTZ's locomotive fleet renewal and maintenance support, including the next-generation locomotive KZ8A(NG). To date, 160 freight and 80 passenger locomotives and 90 freight and 39 passenger locomotives to be produced and delivered for KTZ are in commercial operation. Both sides agreed to combine efforts to increase capacity and rail know-how in the supplier base in the country to increase localization rates. Alstom has developed a strong supplier base with more than 12 local partners over the last 340 years and plans to further expand this base and increase localization rates.
Alstom and KTZ agreed to diversify their partnership and establish an interconnected center of excellence in Kazakhstan to build EBI Lock 950 product (signalization) expertise in the country. Alstom is taking an important step towards the track of tomorrow and is a vital player in the framework of sustainable development. In addition, Alstom will work with KTZ on the implementation of low-emission railway technologies with a focus on hydrogen and battery-powered trains to reduce transport-related emissions in the country.

Alstom in Kazakhstan employs more than 1.000 people and has four service sites and two production facilities. One plant is EKZ in Astana for the production of freight and passenger electric locomotives and on-board transformers and bogies, and the second is KEP in Almaty to manufacture point machines that will serve the country's railway network. Alstom contributes greatly to the revival of the country's mobility industry and to the development of its economy.
The chosen solutions have a significant impact on the daily lives of Kazakh residents and are an integral part of the modernization of the country's railway network. The components of the 250 freight and 119 passenger capacity Prima locomotives are 97% recyclable as well as offering faster, higher capacity and high availability rates. According to Alstom's operational data, Alstom trains operated in Kazakhstan have 89% less gCO2/passenger.km compared to cars and will see further reductions in CO2 emissions as the country increases the use of renewable energy in its energy mix.
