Sole Detainee Defendant in Çorlu Train Accident Case Released

TCDD 1st Region Railway Regional Maintenance Manager Mümin Karasu, who was the only prisoner of the Çorlu Train Massacre, was released. Mısra Öz, mother of Oğuz Arda Sel, who lost her life in the massacre, shared the decision on her social media account and said, “In this life where we have been dying and resurrected for 5 years, the only thing we hold on to is justice. You forcibly arrested one person after 25 years, killing 5 people. It didn't even last until the next session! May your justice perish!” showed his reaction.

At the 11th hearing of the lawsuit regarding the Çorlu Train Massacre, the court decided to issue an arrest warrant for Mümin Karasu, the TCDD 1st Region Railway Regional Maintenance Manager, for the crime of "causing the death and injury of more than one person by deliberate negligence".

Karasu came to Çorlu Courthouse with his lawyer 5 days after this decision. After his statement, Karasu was sent to prison. Mümin Karasu's detention was appealed by his lawyer. The Public Prosecutor, who gave a written opinion on the petition, demanded that the decision was in accordance with the law and that the objection be rejected.

The Çorlu 2nd High Criminal Court, which examined the objection, accepted the objection to Karasu's detention and decided to release him with a ban on abroad.

In the justification for his release, it was stated that “… the accused personally came to the courthouse on 10/10/2022 and surrendered and was arrested, and in this state, he was not in a fugitive state in the face of his own surrender, again after the examination of the file and at the hearing, no new evidence was included, the crime date of the file was 2018, Considering the fact that more than one defendant was tried pending trial on the same criminal charges, there was no evidence that could be intervened as of the stage of the file and the date of the crime, and that detention was a precautionary measure, the objection of the defense counsel was accepted and the defendant Mümin Karasu was released…” expressions were included.

Mısra Öz, the mother of Oğuz Arda Sel, who lost her life in the train disaster at the age of 9, reacted to the decision with her social media account. Mısra Öz wrote the following in her post:

“In this life where we have been dying and resurrected for 5 years, the only thing we hold on to is justice. You forcibly arrested one person after 25 years, killing 5 people. It didn't even last until the next session! Let your justice sink! May God curse everyone who cannot take care of those who die or those who are left in this country!”
