First Pile Driven for Buca Metro!

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, went to the construction site of the Buca Metro and announced that the first pile was driven and the construction started. President Soyer said that it was a historic day for İzmir and said, “We are proud and excited to launch the biggest investment in İzmir's history under perhaps the most difficult conditions Turkey has been going through. From the very beginning, we said, 'That metro will come to Buca,'" he said.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyerwent to the construction site of Buca Metro, the biggest investment in the history of the city, and announced that the first pile was driven and the construction started. Minister Tunç Soyer“As of today, a metro work with a cost of over 1 billion Euros, 13 and a half kilometers and 11 stations, is starting. This is an investment that we started with a syndication loan by forming a consortium of 490 million Euros in an environment where the economic crisis has deepened. We created a financing model with 3 percent interest, 12-year maturity, 4-year grace period and 8-year repayment. The whole of the metro is being built by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality's own means. It will be fully repaid with the financing of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Therefore, we are making perhaps one of the most productive investments in history. Because the 4-year grace period corresponds to the construction period. Once the construction is completed, the refund will begin when the subway opens. Therefore, the business will continue on its way by self-financing without any money coming out of anyone's pocket.”

“The first day of a work that will last 4 years”

Emphasizing that they are very excited, Mayor Soyer said, “36 columns, each 340 meters long, will be assembled one by one. Today we begin to assemble the 36-meter column. With an application patented by our friends, it becomes possible to prepare 36-meter columns very quickly. From here, it is quickly moved to its place and assembly begins. We will probably unload the tunnel boring machine from the first station in early March. Three tunnel boring machines will start working,” he said.

Emphasizing that they are on the first day of a great work that will last for 4 years, President Soyer continued his words as follows: “We laid the foundation on February 14th. It's been 8 months. Unfortunately, we had some legal problems. Thankfully, our legal system listened to the parties. We continue where we left off. We are proud and excited to launch the biggest investment in İzmir's history under perhaps the most difficult conditions that Turkey is going through. From the very beginning, we said, 'That metro will come to Buca'."

“A route extending from the periphery of the city into the interior”

Stating that they aim to carry 400 thousand passengers a day, President Soyer said, “This means a turnover and revenue of 45 million Euros per year. This shows how healthy and consistent the financing model is. It will be possible to repay only with the income of the business. When you carry 400 thousand passengers on this line, you withdraw all buses. You take public transport underground. At the same time, the opportunity for quality and relaxation arises in relation to the urban fabric above. The metro is not just a means of transportation, it turns into an instrument that improves the quality of life. This place will also be connected to the Narlıdere Metro line. We are moving rapidly towards the point where we say we are knitting İzmir with iron nets. Our metro lines in Izmir were parallel to the coast. This is the first time it extends vertically inwards. Therefore, it is possible to talk about a complete network. A route will emerge from the periphery of the city to the interior and into the Gulf,” he said.

“It will leave important traces in the future of Izmir”

Mayor Soyer emphasized that İzmir Metropolitan Municipality is in a major rail system attack and said, “We will start the trial run of the Çiğli Tram this month. It's also a huge investment. In 2023, we will probably start the trial runs of the Narlıdere Metro, like March-April. In three months, we'll be down here with the tunnel boring machine. In short, they will continue to walk parallel to each other. These are huge investments that will leave important traces in the future of İzmir.”
