Global Fertilizer Crisis Can Be Overcome With Russia-Turkey Trade Bridge

Due to its geopolitical position and ongoing trade with Russia, Turkey is an important candidate country for a solution in overcoming the fertilizer production and raw material shipment crisis that adversely affected the whole world.

Fertilizer, which is one of the important inputs affecting the efficiency and quality in production in the agricultural sector, has turned into a global crisis due to problems such as raw materials, transportation and natural gas shipments caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

Stating that the crisis had a negative impact on our country, Metin Güneş, Chairman of the Fertilizer Manufacturers Importers and Exporters Association (GUID), stated that it is possible to overcome this crisis with a trade bridge to be formed between Russia and Turkey, whose economic activities continue. Metin Güneş, who gives information about the size of the fertilizer market in our country, said, “In 2020, 7.1 million tons of fertilizer was used in Turkey. This decrease occurred due to the increase in fertilizer prices in the world. Fertilizer prices increased due to many reasons such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the recovery of the Covid process, increases in commodity prices and freight costs, and energy problems. Our country was also adversely affected by this increase. Price increases have been observed between 200% and 300% in the last two years. Currently, prices are flat, but there is a decrease in demand due to high prices in our country. Fertilizer consumption, which decreased by 2021% in 15 in Turkey, decreased by 2022-6% in the first 25 months of 30, according to current market data.

Turkey can play a role in overcoming the crisis

Stating that European countries are the most affected by the fertilizer crisis, Metin Güneş, Chairman of the Board of GÜİD; Noting that it is possible for Turkey to play an active role in fertilizer production and shipment, which affects the world, he continued: “As our country, we have been less affected by the fertilizer crisis as our trade with Russia continues. Currently, we do not have fertilizer exports to Europe. Currently, the European Union is trying to overcome the supply and demand problem in fertilizers. Because fertilizer is an important agricultural input that affects yield and quality in plant production. Therefore, the low yield experienced when the yield decreases also triggers food inflation. As a country, we want to create a fertilizer corridor and deliver the fertilizer in Russia to the whole world. Turkey is an important candidate to overcome this crisis due to its geopolitical position and ongoing trade with Russia. If this happens, we will both provide a financial advantage to Turkey and prevent the fertilizer crisis.”

As GUID, we will be at the Growtech Fair with new products

Metin Güneş, who stated that they, as the Fertilizer Manufacturers, Importers and Exporters Association, have been participating in the Growtech Fair for years and getting positive feedback, said, “It is one of the most important agriculture fairs both in the region and in the world, including Europe. It is a very successful fair in terms of the number of visitors and the quality of the company. There is no longer any need to go abroad to meet foreign companies. Growtech brings world companies to our country. There is a product called bio stimulant, which has been emphasized more recently, both protective and nourishing.
