Early Diagnosis and Treatment Warning in Neck Hernia

Private Gözde Kuşadası Hospital Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Gültekin Erdoğan said that early diagnosis and intervention is important in cervical hernia.

Erdoğan pointed out that neck hernia, which can be seen in a wide age group, manifests itself as neck-arm pain, numbness in the hands and fingers, and lifelessness.

Emphasizing that neck hernia, which is more common in middle-aged people and occurs due to nerve compression due to calcification as a result of aging, can also be seen as a result of impact and trauma, Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Gültekin Erdoğan said, “Neck hernia can increase depending on the sedentary lifestyle and occupation of the person. The risk of neck hernia increases in people who work by leaning forward, deal with handicrafts, and use high pillows. First of all, we listen to the patient's complaint. In order to determine the risk factors, we examine whether there are neck range of motion, strength, sensory and reflex disorders. If there are findings suggestive of neck hernia, neck MRI is taken. With MRI, we examine both the structure of the spine and the nerve roots. We can see if there is pressure on the nerves, and if so, what is the severity and degree. According to the patient's condition, we primarily apply drug therapy and physical therapy. If the pressure is severe and there is a hernia, we recommend surgery.”

MICRO SURGERY METHOD

Noting that nowadays, they are mostly treated with microsurgery in neck hernia surgeries, Erdoğan continued his words as follows: “This surgery is preferred because it causes the least damage to critical tissues. Although it varies from person to person, the operation takes about an hour and a half. We take the damaged herniated tissue formed in the neck vertebra. Instead of the tissue taken, we make support. In this way, we also reduce the pain that can be experienced after the surgery. Microsurgical surgery provides a significant advantage to patients. Since the tissue damage is minimal, the patient can go home the day after the operation and return to his normal life within 1 week.
