Cyber attacks threaten states in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Especially after the Ukraine-Russia war, the number of attacks increased. Websites of public institutions in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Moldova, Estonia and Albania were also targeted.

Cyber attacks gained momentum after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Many countries in Eastern Europe and the Balkans are the target of cyber attacks. According to local media reports, a group called Killnet, formed by Russian hackers, attacked the website of the Bulgarian State Intelligence Service.

The attack was announced on Killnet's Telegram channel. After a short interruption, the site of the Bulgarian intelligence was reopened. Poland, Romania, Moldova, Estonia, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo are also targets.

Last month, the Killnet group carried out a cyber-attack on the websites of the Bulgarian Presidency and the Ministry of Interior, as well as the websites of the country's leading media outlets.

The attacks were not limited to Bulgaria. The websites of intelligence agencies of Poland, Romania, Moldova and Estonia were cyber-attacked. Public institutions in North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo have also been the target of cyberattacks.

The subject of cyber attack has also strained Tirana-Tehran relations.

Albania announced on September 7 that it was severing diplomatic relations with Iran, on the grounds that it had carried out a cyber-attack on official government websites.
