An awareness area was opened at Üçyol Metro Station on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November. In the area, there is a mural work adapted from the cartoon with the theme “Combating Violence Against Women” by cartoonist Halit Kurtulmuş Aytoslu, who won the prize in the cartoon competition organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and attended by 62 artists from 160 countries.

She drew attention to the problems experienced by women from Özus

Speaking at the program, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu said that women experience human rights violations by being exposed to both gender inequality and physical violence. Özuslu said that many women who were exposed to physical violence lost their lives, and that the judicial mechanisms and existing laws could not put enough willpower to change the order in question. Even when women try to make their voices heard, they face pressure. Women need to live in a society where equal, just and democratic human rights are prioritized, not qualification, classification, compassion and tolerance by others. They need to live in a social order where they don't have to say 'I'm here too', where they don't have to fight to be visible and protect their rights," he said.

We work against violence against women

Referring to the work carried out by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Women's Studies, Özulsu said, "Together, we demonstrate the will necessary for the change of the current order and we continue our work with determination. While we work together with our Women's Solidarity Center, Gender Equality Unit and non-governmental organizations to prevent all kinds of violence against women, we continue to support the next process.

Violence against women is increasing day by day

İzmir City Council and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Gender Equality Commission Chairman Nilay Kökkılınç said that efforts have been made to combat violence against women for many years, but no success has been achieved. Kökkılınç said, “Violence against women is increasing day by day. There are many reasons for this. As İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Gender Equality Commission, our İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mr. Tunç Soyer With the support of his wife, Neptün Soyer, we have done a lot of work,” he said.
After the speeches, the participants visited the mural exhibition on “Gender Equality”.

Of the awarded works

The work of Halit Kurtulmuş Aytoslu, who won the third prize in the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Gender Equality International Cartoon Competition, was reinterpreted by mural artists Yunus Şahin and Mustafa Deniz Kubilay and started to be exhibited on the wall of Üçyol Metro Station. 62 artists from 160 countries participated in the competition with more than 1600 works. As a result of the competition, which was evaluated by a selective expert committee consisting of graphic artists, cartoonists, painters and illustrators, the winning works and the first 100 works were also dressed on public transportation vehicles last year.

They danced for a world without violence

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality organized another event with the slogan “A World Without Violence is Possible Together” in cooperation with Izmir City Council on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 25 November. Contemporary dance artist Cansu Ergin and defender Sami Hosseini performed live in front of Konak Square Orange Garden.
