Another phase of the assembly of the inner protection shell (IKK) in the 3rd Power Unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Unit (NGS) has been completed.

The second layer of IKK, one of the main elements of the security system of the nuclear power plant, has been successfully installed in the reactor building located in the 3rd power unit of Akkuyu NPP. A time-saving prefabrication method is used in the assembly of the shell.

The second layer of the IKK is a welded metal structure consisting of 24 sections. The assembly of the expanded layer, which weighs more than 330 tons and has a diameter of more than 20 meters, was carried out using the Liebherr LR 13000 heavy crawler crane and took approximately 7 hours.

After the installation, the height of the reactor building of the 3rd unit increased by 12 meters and reached 16,9 meters.

Sergey Butckikh, First Deputy Director General and Construction Director of NGS, said: “The inner protection shell is an important element of the reactor section. As one of the major structural elements of the reactor building, IKK ensures the safety and environmental safety of the reactor. The next stage in the construction of the inner protection shell of the reactor building is the construction of its third layer. In the previous stage, the second layer needs to be reinforced with iron, special molds must be installed and concreting must be done," he said.

Outside the inner protection shell of the reactor building, the construction of an external shield for the construction of Russia's innovative 3+ generation VVER-1200 power units is envisaged. The outer protection shell serves to protect the reactor equipment from all kinds of external influences.

Construction and installation work at the Akkuyu NPP site continues at all main and auxiliary facilities, including the four power units, coastal hydrotechnical structures, power distribution system, administrative buildings, training center and NPP physical protection facilities.
