What Does a Literature Teacher Do? What are their Duties and Responsibilities?
The dictionary of the Turkish Language Association defines the word 'literature' as follows; “The art of forming events, thoughts, feelings and dreams through language, verbally or in writing.” The literature teacher is expected to convey to the students the foundations of the cultural heritage shaped throughout history, expressed in language. In addition, the responsibilities of the literature teacher are as follows;
- To provide training on the structure and content of the Turkish language, including correct grammar, spelling and sentence structure,
- To inform students about interpreting literature,
- Provide book recommendations for students, including classic and contemporary novels.
- Planning the curriculum, course content and materials, teaching methods,
- To enable students to benefit from library resources,
- Adapting the curriculum to the needs of each student,
- Developing students' critical thinking skills while improving their oral and written communication skills,
- To create a classroom environment conducive to learning and stimulating the spirit of inquiry,
- Liaising with parents to discuss students' academic progress and, where necessary, behavioral issues.
What Education Is Required to Become a Literature Teacher?
Students who graduate from the Turkish Language and Literature Teaching Department of universities are entitled to have the title of Literature Teacher. Students who graduate from the Faculty of Turkish Language and Literature are required to take pedagogical formation in order to be able to teach. Teachers who want to work within the Ministry of National Education are required to take the Public Personnel Examination.
