IMM implemented the Disaster Volunteers project against a possible Istanbul earthquake. Volunteers, who have undergone extensive training under the coordination of AKOM, will be able to respond first after a disaster. The project was chosen by the people of Istanbul within the scope of IMM's Participatory Budget Practice. All Istanbul residents can apply to the project, which is realized in cooperation with IMM and AKUT Foundation.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) launched the Disaster Volunteers project to provide the fastest response in possible disasters. Within the scope of the project, 450 volunteers will be given "Light Search and Rescue Training" and 5.000 volunteers will be given "Assembly Area Organization Training" at the first stage. Volunteers will be able to perform first aid interventions and prevent chaos and panic until the authorized units arrive at the disaster area.
FROM FIRST RESPONSE TO DAMAGE ASSESSMENT…
The trainings, which last 16 hours in total, take place under two main headings. First of all, the volunteers who receive the "Organization in Assembly Areas" training gain the ability to evaluate the post-disaster situation, to operate the crime scene management and recording system. Volunteers who complete the "First Responder Team" training can gain the skills to provide wreckage safety, damage assessment, fire response and first response to disaster victims in lightly damaged buildings.
THE PROJECT CHOSEN BY ISTANBUL PEOPLE
The Disaster Volunteers Project was evaluated by the residents of Istanbul within the scope of IMM's Participatory Budget Practice and selected among 5 thousand projects. The project is carried out under the coordination of IMM AKOM (Disaster Coordination Centre), in cooperation with AKUT Foundation and other relevant non-governmental organizations.
