Fainting Can Be a Sign of Serious Heart Disease!

Fainting is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of a disease. Cardiology Specialist Associate Prof.Dr.Ömer Uz gave important information about the subject.

What is fainting?

Syncope means fainting in medical language. Patients who pass out lose their consciousness and posture. During fainting, individuals may collapse to the ground suddenly. This is what makes syncope dangerous for healthy individuals. Most of the time, individuals lose their consciousness without even realizing it and they collapse to where they are. In the meantime, they get hit on their heads, fall from somewhere, etc. possible. In some cases, it is also possible that they feel they are going to pass out. They may try to reassure themselves because of the feeling of fainting, which is known as "presyncope" in medical language.

What are the causes of fainting?

  • Epilepsy disease.
  • Sudden drops in blood sugar.
  • Blood pressure disease, sudden change in blood pressure.
  • Some heart diseases.
  • Some diseases of the brain vessels.
  • Some diseases related to the lungs.

Syncope often does not occur due to any health problem. In some cases, the body may faint as a response to environmental factors. Of course, this is also dangerous. Since patients cannot choose the place where they will faint; they may faint in traffic, in the middle of the road, in a high place. As a result, they may injure themselves. However, what makes syncope really dangerous is; are health problems originating from the brain or heart.

Fainting is often the result of a sudden cessation of blood flow to the brain or a large reduction in blood flow. The brain cannot get the oxygen it needs to continue its activities and shuts itself down. As a result, fainting occurs. There are many factors that affect blood flow to the brain. We will touch on the ones related to the Cardiology department of these factors.

Fainting due to Heart Diseases

Cardiac syncope is the fainting that occurs due to heart and heart diseases. Almost 5 in 1 cases of fainting are caused by heart-related causes.

Rhythm disorders and structural disorders in the heart; They can cause changes in the amount of blood reaching the brain. If the amount of blood going to the brain drops below a certain level, people may lose consciousness and faint.

Rhythm disturbances affect both the pattern of the heartbeat and the volume of blood pumped by the heart. Therefore, especially some types of rhythm disorders can cause frequent fainting. Rhythm disorders, which often manifest themselves as palpitations; in some cases they can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness and fainting.

Rhythm disorders are very serious disorders. They must be treated as they cause conditions such as syncope and affect the whole body, including the heart.

What is fainting treatment?

Prof.Dr.Ömer Uz said, “First aid to individuals who experience fainting should be done by healthcare professionals who are experts in their field or individuals who have received first aid training. Patients may fall and injure the head and neck regions during syncope, so as much as possible, the patient should not be moved until healthcare professionals arrive. "Patients who have fainted recover when their blood pressure and pulse return to normal levels," he said.

However, the underlying causes of syncope should also be investigated. If fainting is seen due to rhythm disorders in the heart, the person may encounter more serious health conditions due to rhythm disorders. Therefore, a cardiologist should be consulted. Thus, if syncope is seen due to arrhythmia, an appropriate treatment can be planned according to the type of rhythm disorder.
