Abdullah Uçan, General Manager of the Protection of Natural Assets of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, attended the meeting of the "Biological Diversity Research Project in the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area".

In his speech here, Uçan said that Turkey is in a geography where the whole world admires its nature, culture and biological diversity and said, “In order to reach the target of 'to increase our country's protected area to 2023 percent by 17', which was set forth by our Ministry, we are constantly seeking protection by identifying new areas. we are working." said.

Emphasizing that the protected special environmental protection zones and natural sites are areas of ecological importance on a national and global scale, Uçan said, “These areas have an important role in meeting the basic needs of life. They add value to socio-economic life both with the ecosystem services they produce and by meeting the needs of humans and other living things. However, protected areas also contribute to the production of many new values by allowing the development of genetic diversity. There are many areas in our country that are worth protecting. While our General Directorate gives protection status to such areas, it carries out the necessary works for the protection and management of natural resources, taking into account the balance of protection and use of regions and natural sites.” he said.

Uçan stated that thanks to its conservation efforts, Turkey sets an example for the international community in the sensitive management of protected areas with the national strategies it has created.

Uçan stated that protected areas are constantly reviewed with the follow-up of the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, in order to protect the ecosystem and reduce the effects of climate change, which is one of the most important problems of the whole world.

“In order to reach the goal of 'to increase the protected area of our country to 2023 percent by 17', set by our Ministry, we are constantly working to identify and protect new areas. With this understanding, the scientific data obtained as a result of the diversity determination studies we have carried out for the holistic management of protected areas are important findings that we proudly share in national and international academic platforms. Köyceğiz Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area, biodiversity detection project is a project we carry out with this sensitivity. Köyceğiz Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area, which constitutes our project area, was declared in 1988. The region has an area of approximately 461 square kilometers within the borders of Köyceğiz and Ortaca districts. There are 14 neighborhoods in Köyceğiz and 18 neighborhoods in Ortaca within the boundaries of the region. It was made in order to determine the natural values, problems and threats in the region and to reveal the measures to be taken within the framework of a plan. In the project we have carried out, the existing biodiversity, ideological, geological, social, economic and physical determinations have been made and important species and habitats in the region have been determined and classified.”

Stating that the current threats were determined and protection measures were taken with the researches in the region, Uçan noted that all the data obtained were transferred to geographic information systems and synthesis and evaluation studies were carried out.

Uçan said that it will be possible to protect the area more effectively and to achieve the balance of protection and use, and said:

“As a result of these studies, it is aimed to protect the ecosystems and habitats in the region and to increase the economic welfare of the local people by solving the problems faced by the people of the region in line with their needs. In this context, in the light of all these scientific findings obtained in this study, which started with the instructions of our Minister Murat Kurum, it will be re-evaluated within the current conditions, taking into account the works of our scientists, the demands of the municipalities, the mukhtars and the needs of the local people.
